The Great Island of Catan

This is a variant setup and game rules for Settlers of Catan that uses many of the special tiles that can be found in the various expansions. We have enjoyed playing it and we never use the original setup anymore. It is been designed for 6 players, but it scales well for 3, 4, and 5 players.

Enjoy,
Paul Nomikos
Original May 2007 , Revision: May 2017

Objective:
To win you need 12 victory points (independent of number of players).

Components:
The basic game has 19 tiles (1 desert, 4 x Pasture/Field/Forest , 3 x Hill/Mountain) and 18 tokens (1 x 2/12 , 2 x 3/4/5/6/8/9/10/11).
The 6-player expansion has 11 tiles (1 desert, 2 x Pasture/Field/Forest/Hill/Mountain) and 10 tokens (1 x 2/3/4/5/6/8/9/10/11/12).
This variant needs all the tiles and tokens from the basic game. It also needs 5 tiles (1 x Pasture/Field/Forest/Hill/Mountain), 4 tokens (1 x 3/4/10/11), and a special token “2 or 12” (this special token is in addition to the one needed for the Gold tile).
This variant additionally requires 6 special tiles and 6 special tokens (you can make them of found them in the various expansions):
Wizard’s Castle tile that always gets the special token “6+1”.
Gold tile that always gets the special token “2 or 12”.
Oasis tile that always gets the special token that shows “6 yellow die pips”.
Santa Claus tile that always gets the special token that shows “6 yellow die pips”.
Castle tile that always gets the special token that shows “6 red die pips”.
Volcano tile that always gets the special token that shows “6 red die pips”.
For 5-players, you need an additional dessert tile. For 4-players, you need two additional dessert tiles. For 3-players, you need three additional dessert tiles.

Set-Up:
Use the set-up from the 6-player expansion. Place the special tokens to their corresponding special tiles. Distribute randomly the rest of the tokens (no two tokens with red numbers can be next to each other, one basic tile will get the special token of “2 or 12”).
For 5-players: Replace the basic tile that has the “2 or 12” token with a desert.
For 4-players: Replace two basic tiles that have “3” and “11” token with two deserts.
For 3-players: Replace the basic tile that has the “2 or 12” token and two basic tiles that have “4” and “10” token with three deserts.

Rules:
The special building phase at the end of each player turn is in effect as this is described in the 6-player expansion.
You can play only 1 development card during your turn (even one that you just bought during your turn).
The Soldier card is the only card that can be played out of turn at any time when any player moves the Robber to a new tile. The Robber is moved again by the player who played the soldier card, and only this player steals a card. Multiple Soldier cards can be played as a chain reaction (only the last player steals a card).

Wizard’s Castle:
This is activated when one die is 6 and the other die is 1.
For every settlement, you get one development card.
For every city, you get two development cards.

Gold:
This is activated when the dice roll is 12 or 2.
For every settlement, you get one resource card of your choice.
For every city, you get two resource cards of your choice (they must be the same).

Oasis:
This is activated when the yellow die is 6. The other die {2,3,4,5,6} indicates the resource that is produced. Just lay down all the resources in a row, and the first resource corresponds to die number 2, the second resource corresponds to die number 3, etc. If the other die is 1, then no resources are produced as in the regular game.

Santa Claus:
This is activated when the yellow die is 6. The active player decides what it produces.

Castle:
This is activated when the red die is 6. The other die indicates the side where a settlement/city will produce. Only the settlement/city in that side will produce. It will produce from both adjacent tiles.

Volcano:
This is activated when the red die is 6. The other die {1,2,3,4,5,6} indicates the intersection in the volcano tile that is covered with lava. Any road segments that are connected in this intersection are destroyed. Any settlement in this intersection is destroyed. Any city in this intersection is reduced to a settlement.
All settlements and cities in a volcano tile produce 1 more resource. Thus, you get 2 resources for every settlement and 3 resources for every city. Resources are produced normally from any adjacent tiles (the volcano itself does not produce any resources).
When the volcano erupts on a red die of 6, production is distributed after the lava destroys roads, settlements, and reduces cities to settlements.

The expansions of Coins, and Helpers work well with this variant.
