Previously : Rhineland reoccupied, Ethiopia conquered, Japan invades China and defeats the Nationalists, Anschluss, Russian purges, Spanish Civil War stalemates, CW and France establish new Entente Cordiale, Persia conquered, Germany and Italy sign a second pact, Czechoslovakia sacrificed, Bessarabia seized, Finland attacked, Germany conquers Belgium and Denmark and forces Vichy France. Italy declares war on the CW and the Free French. The US declares war on Japan who subsequently declares war on the CW and quickly conquer most of the CW possessions East of Delhi. The Germans invade Poland after the Democrats make it simple for them and the Japanese invade Australia.

This is short report to finish off the May / June 1941 turn started in the previous missive.

Next morning …

Democrats up and as usual the CW naval search rolls are unimpressive. A naval combat in the Western Med results in damage to the Suffolk and Germanico. Next round, Laurence rolls better search rolls and gets 6 surprise points for a big air to sea combat. However the air to air fight goes Greg’s way and all the CW planes are shot down (mostly due to lack of effective fighter cover). And on the third round Greg gets surprise and kills the last plane. The Indomitable is damaged and the RN flees. 1-0 to the Italians.

The US and French do nothing due to lack of any troops.

Germany does a combined and sinks everything they meet courtesy of an impressive series of search rolls. A condor from Kiel port strikes London damaging a transport. Then the Komet slinks out of Montevideo & finds the Free French transport & 6 convoys in the Cape Basin - the transport & the convoys are all sent to the repair pool. Meanwhile in the Faeroes another Condor from Brest & 3 subs repeatedly find and sink/damage/abort 6 convoys, an ASW and 3 cruisers and in the process (almost incidentally) clear the sea area. For all you search roll enthusiasts out there the German rolls went 1, 2, 1, 1, & 2. “Quite remarkable” David Coleman was heard to mutter from his grave.

Taking a lead from his German chum, Greg’s Japanese find the US fleet in the Tasman Sea. Despite the usual good air to air rolling the US escapes relatively unscathed with only CV Yorktown and SCS New Orleans damaged. Interestingly, they were only damaged, which given the desperate straits the Democrats are in could almost be construed as a victory.

The CW finally find the Eastern Med Italians remove the CP and sink the Taranto. The Eastern Med now belongs to the CW but it’s all a bit pyrrhic by now given the domination of teh Western Med by Italy.

The turn finally ends – weather has stopped the conquest of India for the moment. Partisans appear in France and Yugoslavia – but they are unlikely to be around long. The litany of Democratic failure continues and in fact is now picking up pace. China, Australia, Poland and Iraq are conquered.

This probably signals the end for the Democrats on most of the Pacific map as the Japanese army is now freed from anything but garrison duty in China (where we have had very few partisans to date). They outnumber the combined Democrat armies by four or five to one and even with the growing US presence, the IJN is vastly superior to the combined CW and US fleets (in both quantity and quality).

Still, mustn’t grumble, eh?

You've still got the Soviets and the Yanks...

Indeed, but the Soviets have been very quiet and don't seem interested in attacking as yet. Hopefully this will change.

The Yanks are building but it will take time before they are able to confront the Japanese and Greg will use that time to expand and protect his co-prosperity sphere. There are likely to be some serious naval battles come 1943 which may well decide the outcome of the game.
