Verdict just came in

It's...unexpected, to say the least.

Bet all the occupiers that plea bargained out for admission of guilt feel kinda silly, now, but...really, who could have expected that verdict?

Another source

Quote:
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan Knight unsuccessfully argued that the case had nothing to do with Bundy's regularly brandished pocket Constitution, nothing to do with the arson sentences currently being served by Dwight and Steven Hammond and nothing to do with the Bunkerville standoff, which is the subject of separate prosecution in Nevada.

"It's not about the beliefs or values of any of these defendants," Knight told the jury. "It's about them deciding which laws apply and which don't. It's about a collective decision to take what isn't theirs and make it theirs."

Knight said Bundy and his co-defendants thought the law applied differently to them, that they believed they could choose which laws to follow because they were acting for the right reasons.

"Not Guilty"

Trial by jury, folks - basically a dice game!

It does seem like it sets a...troubling precedent, given all the saber-rattling currently happening from the losing side of the Presidential race.

I mean, if...

Quote:
He patiently and exhaustively described his family life, his political beliefs and the lack of response to his demands from government officials, which he claimed justified the occupation

...is enough for a 'not guilty' verdict and he can go on his way* even after...

Quote:
... that caused an estimated $6 million in damage to the refuge and left dozens in jail and one man dead...

Yikes? I have to admit some degree of concern that this will be read as a blank check to half the ammosexuals in the country.

* More or less - he faces unrelated charges in other states for other crimes, so is being transferred

Seems like the judge is letting it stand.

Very curious about the reasoning behind all this - the prosecution really had dialed the charges WAY back from basically anything there could be any argument over, taking 'rights' and political positions and everything out of it, and the only remaining charge was conspiracy to prevent Federal employees from doing their jobs on the refuge.

Which I would have thought was inarguable - the refuge was occupied by this gang, and the armed mob were prohibiting Federal employees from coming onto the land.

Open and shut.

?Apparently not?

Again, I just want to hear the reasoning. My gut is that especially after the reset, the 'not guilty' folks were just more stubborn (which doesn't negate your position)

He stood accused of keeping federal employees from doing their job.

No joke.

You don't even see the irony, do you?

That aside, did they? How could you even tell?

Men you know to be armed, and are prone to violent rhetoric, are occupying your place of work (imagine that you have an office job). Are you comfortable going in to work?

Meh, they went through the system, and the system let them off. Can't be too upset by that. Sounds like their lucky day. I'm sure we haven't seen their final time in a court.

Bundy's idiot lawyer demanded the judge release them immediately and started shouting at the judge (which is soooo professional)

They ended up tazing and arresting him.

Next up, trial in 2017 over the Nevada standoff.

I agree with Mac. Jury nullification. The feds might have wanted to charge them with some lesser charges like criminal trespass. Oh well, d'oh.
