Where did you get the idea that the top 100 are the only that are any good?

Whatever gave you the idea that BGG threads about top 100 games contain any factual basis or information?

Take a game The Business Game not in the top 100 rank 7646 yet 3 people still rank it a 10, the top 100 games just have more people who rank them higher but a lower ranked game may hit the sweet spot for you.

I never equated the top 100 games to being the only ones that are good. There are almost 87,000 games in the database. Surely there are more than 100 good ones.

Yeah, I've been hanging around this site for thirteen years now and I can't recall really anyone ever saying that the top 100 games were the only ones worth playing. I was here for the Euro-Ameritrash wars, the Puerto Rico-Agricola struggle, and the Wargamer insurrection (ie the Twilight Struggle incident) but even with all of that bickering I can't remember when anyone said the BGG Top 100 were the only worthy games.

Even if someone believed that, the top 100 is constantly churning with new titles entering and others leaving. If you had consistently made owning the top 100 your goal for a few years you'd have significantly more than 100 games

If I believe that the top 100 games were the only games worth being in my collection, then I would have gotten rid of the following a long time ago:

Settlers of Catan (213) - used to be top 100, and I still love it.
Memoir '44 (106) - used to be top 100, one of my favorite games
Thunderbolt Apache Leader 2nd Edition (577)- just acquired it and a I REALLLY LOVE IT!
Aquaretto (683) - less popular version of it's cousin Zooloretto. btw I like Aquaretoo more.
Zooloretto (508) - umm.. still like it and play with my kids
Galaxy Defenders (708) - love playing this with my son.
San Juan (181) - wife and I enjoy this along with Lost Cities (278), Battle Line (144), and Ingenious (264).

the list goes on for games out of the top 100 in my collection.

Please can you clarify?

My guess is that perhaps you are suggesting, that most recommendations and buzz revolves around top 100 games. But I know not!

You had it right in the first sentence (exclamatory). Should have quit while you were ahead.

Nobody has more than 100 games in their collection. It's just a bunch of online personas being paid by the gaming companies to keep up a charade. Tom Vasel has a total collection of 7 games: Cosmic Encounter, and Munchkin with 5 expansions. I have never owned nor played a board game. I just play War with 8 decks of cards, and sometimes post some nonsense to keep up appearances.

Maybe some of us just enjoy playing an awful game every once in awhile.

And more importantly, why would anyone ever buy a new game? After all if it has just been released it cannot be in the top 100. Therefore it must be a lousy game.

You need to build a wall between the games outside of the Top 100 and Texas!

I look through the top 100 and only see a couple games I even want to try. It all depends on your personal taste. Statistically The top 100 appeal to a wide range of people who rate them highly, but everyone likes different things, and some people will be on the edges of the bell curve.
