Does anyone else find the slogan "The town is, actually, big enough..." ironic?

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

It's like a black fly in your chardonnay.

Or a death row pardon two minutes too late.

This is not ironic, even if Alanis Morissette sings about it.

Ironic
happening in the opposite way to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement because of this.
"it was ironic that now that everybody had plenty of money for food, they couldn't obtain it because everything was rationed"

I guess the you could make a case for "death row pardon two minutes", it is expected to be 4 minutes earlier.

But it is ironic that a song titled ironic contains no irony.

Don't you think?

Your example of irony is awfully close to a free ride when you've already paid.

I can tell you the town is big enough, but the hotel sadly is not.

Wait, do you expect a black fly in your chardonnay?

(It occurs to me that there should be a Morissette Law like Godwin's Law: I think in pretty much every thread I've ever seen where someone quotes that song, someone else replies that it's not really ironic and gives a definition of "ironic".)

The ONLY thing ironic about Alanis's song is NONE of the things she mentions is ironic.

By your definition, though, that's not ironic either. If irony only refers to a deliberate act of saying something different from what you actually mean, then neither the examples in the lyrics are ironic, nor the song itself.

But the meaning of "ironic" is shifting over time. As many words do.

FWIW:

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (2000) wrote:
2 (of a situation) strange or amusing because it is very different from what you expect: It's ironic that she became a teacher - she used to hate school.

3. coincidental; unexpected:
It was ironic that I was seated next to my ex-husband at the dinner.

: strange or funny because something (such as a situation) is different from what you expected

SITUATION
An ironic situation is strange because it is the opposite of what you expected.

[ + that ] It's ironic that she was hurt by the very person she's trying to help.
