It's that time of year! I'm ready, are you? Let's swap some holiday cheer by mailing Christmas cards near and far.

Please oh please oh please read this entire post to re-familiarize yourself with how it works. I think it answers all your questions.

Now! To recap how it works: all you do to sign up is geekmail me your name and snail-mail address. Tell me how many cards you would like to mail out; mailing more than one card was an option many chose last year but choosing to send one card is also absolutely great. Feel free to post a comment on this thread saying anything you like, but you must send me a geekmail in order to be signed up.

Please use this format when sending me your address:

username
real name
address
number of cards you want to send.

Example:

cgund
Connie Gunderson
12345 Mustang Rd
Denver, CO 80228
USA
10 cards

(PS THIS IS NOT MY REAL ADDRESS)

Please NOT like this:
username cgund
real name connie gunderson
address 12345 W Mustang Way
Denver, CO 80228
USA
number of cards you want to send 10

The only real rules I want to employ are these:

1. Please do not sign up to send more than 20 cards.
2. Please do not expect to receive any more than 10 cards.
3. Please be aware you almost definitely will receive addresses of fellow geeks who do not live in your country. This will mean higher postage.

[If you do opt to send multiple cards, I do not guarantee a "one for one" exchange rate (ie, if you send cards to 10 geeks, I am not guaranteeing you'll receive exactly ten in return). I think everyone will be pleased with the number they receive, though, so don't worry that if you send 10 out you'll only get one back. It will be way closer to ten than that.]

There is no gift element here -- just a fun way to say "happy holidays" to geeks around the world. The variety of holiday cards people have sent over the years was very broad, and it was fun out of all proportion to see cards from other lands, homemade cards, game-themed cards, etc. Everyone has really had a great time with this.

And please be clear that people of all traditions are welcome and encouraged to participate. People of no tradition are welcome and encouraged to participate, for that matter. Part of the charm will be in receiving cards from cultures and traditions different than your own, if you ask me!

Make a card, buy a card, either way, just reach out and make a new friend. Wish a German geek "Froehliche Weihnachten!" and tell your new suntanned geek friend on Oahu, "Mele Kalikimaka!"

This year you have until November 21 to get signed up. Please be aware that for the most part, I do not reply to your sign-up geekmails because doing so would put a big time burden on me. Don't worry if you don't hear back from me. If we hit December 1 and you haven't heard back from me, then go ahead and drop me a line.

There will be a microbadge awarded to participants. (Can one of you be my microbadge czar? Ten years in and I still have no idea how to get the badge done).

Also:

Eddie is almost 8 and pretty into games more than toys these days. Recommendations are welcome in your sign-up geekmails, or here in the thread.

He is turning out *not* to be a kid who enjoys abstracts. He enjoys junior dungeon crawls like the various LEGO games...he is DYING to learn D&D and is constantly asking me whether I have any games where you conquer monsters and the like.

Last year for our new Thanksgiving game, we did Catan Jr and he loved it for a few weeks but hasn't been back to it in months. He got Star Wars Carcassonne for Christmas, same thing, loved it for a while and now it's collecting dust.

My first year too. Too bad I didn't know it earlier. Maybe it's because a geek exchange is not creeated officially

This CCE predates the geek exchange by several years and is incompatible with it.

Thanks for all the hard work organizing this every year, Connie. It has become a part of our Christmas season (since we are a family of board gamers, AND lovers of Christmas).

Connie, you're a mensch! I'm interested in participating but may have to hold off this year, as a tree struck our house last week, leaving us relocated to I don't know where for the next several months.

Thank you for putting this on, yet again! It's a highlight for me.

Sounds like fun! Would it be acceptable to send postcards, or are actual folded cards with envelope a requirement?
