Greetings everyone,

With it being November, it is time to start Christmas shopping. For years now, I've given boardgames to my friends, as a sort of "gift that keeps giving" present so that we can continue to play them together.

This year, however, I'm on a tighter budget, having just purchased a house. My limit is approximately $30 (USD) per person. (Which is why I don't get to secret santa this year.)

Therefore, I need a list of good games that can be purchased for under $30 each. I'm not entirely opposed to buying second hand, but would prefer something in shrink because it's more fun to open that way.

My group is pretty eclectic when it comes to games. We've got people who love social deduction and bluffing, other that hate it. People who want a meaty game, and people who can't handle a game with too many moving parts. We play Scythe, Descent, and Eclipse. We play Bora Bora and Terra Mystica. We also play Bang!, Cards Against Humanity, and Cash & Guns. Sometimes we even play Risk or Axis and Allies.

Usually when I think "Under $30" I think Filler, but we have plenty of those that don't get played often, so I'm looking for recommendations that can possibly anchor a game night, not just fill in.

I know this is rather vague and open-ended, but thank you for your recommendations.

Risk: Star Wars Edition is current $8.00 at GameStops in the US. Found out about this a few days ago. Your group sounds like they would like this game if they enjoy Risk and Axis and Allies. Just so you know though, the Star Wars edition isn't like traditional Risk at all; it's got a card driven system to do your actions. It's reminiscent of Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit, but lighter. Hope this helps!

The Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game is one that I like a lot that you can get for under $15. It's lighter than its dad, but it's a bigger game than the box lets on.

Broom Service can be nabbed at about $30. We've had a lot of fun with it. Appeals to both euro games and people who like social/bluffing games.

Hanabi is a filler game if you play it as a filler game, but if taken seriously actually has a lot to it.

The 'Forbidden' tins and Magic:AotP games are fun. You can also look inot Munchkin, but it depends on what theme the person likes.

When I went to Target last week, they were having a b2g1 sale going on. You may wanna check that out.

Hope this helps.

Innovation or anything else by Carl Chudyk except Glory to Rome. Others include: Mottainai Impulse and his latest Bear Valley.

Donald X has Temporum which has a fun sense of humor - the Age of Cats card is a oft cited one. Also Nefarious, a mad scientist game with a sense of humor. I have it but haven't gotten it to the table yet.

Also the new Dominion upgrades and/or a new set of base cards would make some people like me very happy!

Also think expansions, hard to find promos for games they love....yeah the two huts from Stone Age are like $15. I cannot justify spending that on myself...

I don't know how much the Spiel Advent Calendar goes for, watch geek store for announcement, but that could be split among a few people, as stocking stuffers....

Congrats on the house you adult you!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions so far. It's just so easy to overlook so much of the hobby, so this has helped a lot.

Several titles to do more research on and try to match a game to a player.

The following are out though:

Two player games - Never get played.
Star Realms, Citadels, Carcassonne:H&G, Forbidden Series, Pandemic, Innovation, Impulse - Already owned by myself or others in the group
Race For The Galaxy - Already have San Juan, worth it?

Thanks again.

+1 for Nefarious. Plays up to 6. Picked it up last year for Christmas, and it's gotten several plays this year. Introduced it to my brother this summer, and he went and grabbed it himself. The plot twist cards really mix it up from one game to the next, so has tons of replayability.

Innovation, Mottainai, Impulse.

You can't beat Chudyk for amount of game per square inch or per dollar.

Also, Tichu!

I'd consider some older games that didn't really concern themselves with production value.

Carcassonne
Princes of Florence
Acquire

A frugal shopper could also find Power Grid, Castle of Burgundy and Puerto Rico at about 30 dollars.

I would say, yes. RftG is different enough and just plain better than San Juan (in my opinion, of course ).

I agree with Thanee that RftG is better but you gotta gauge your friends on that one and if similar games are as good of a choice as different.

My best suggestion for you is
Spyrium - currently $23. It may not look like much but it blew me away. It uses worker placement with depth I have yet to see again. Once you get your head into it the mechanics make sense and is easy to understand but it stays at a very meaty level as you have to play the board and your opponents just right. Its a common recommendation for requests like yours.

I haven't played any of the Tiny Epic Games, but I am looking into them for my gifts this year. Especially, Ultra Tiny Epic Kingdoms which is Tiny Epic Kingdoms for $10. In stores on Nov 11th.

In lieu of one game, how about putting together a 2-pack of games that cost less than $15 each..

Games like:

Codenames
Hanabi
Pocket Madness
Welcome to the Dungeon
Get Bit!
The Resistance
Saboteur
Bohnanza

If it needs to be a single game, closer to $30, I can recommend the following:

Lanterns: The Harvest Festival
Dice City
Mystic Vale
Eminent Domain

NOTE: Game prices are those found on CSI, assuming that you purchased more than $100 to qualify for free shipping.
