Convincingly done! I personally liked the counter-attack which nabbed a redoubt at the last minute- definately an opportunity I would have been looking for, had I been playing the Judean. And ballsy, to run the few remaining regulars into melee like that. Night turn DRMs were nice, there. I'm making a note to myself...

It's always seemed axiomatic for the Roman to avoid melee on ground at night, and that the Judean 'grand strategy' should hope to take advantage of favorable night-turn rules. That is, if enough units can be preserved until then! But as we have seen, even a few regulars can stick a thumb in the Roman eye. It is reason number one that so many times the Roman opts to take the NC in AP1: well, that combined with low wall strength and relatively few redoubts.

I'm dying to know Roman casualties. Taking out that Judean ballista was worth it, as well as that prime fort on the LC wall. Not to mention mines against the Inner Temple! The groundwork for a very interesting AP2 has been laid down...

The Judaean cannot hold the NC, but he might be able to knock off a few more vulnerable Romans.

Judaean Rally Phase:

Panicked 2-6 @ JJ44. dr: 5+1+2 = 8 NE
Panicked 7-7 @ OO35. dr: 3+1+2 = 6 NE
Panicked 7-7 @ MM36. dr: 1+1+2 = 4 NE

Roman Fire Phase:

2 Rams vs QQ25. dr: 5 4 Damage (BREACH)
4 Archers vs OO21. 11(7)/+4 dr: 2+4 = 6 EE Elim 7-7 x 2

Judaean Fire Phase:

None

Judaean Movement Phase:

Ben Yair and ben Gurion counterattack !

Ben Giora counterattacks out of the Redoubt.

Ben Levi picks up some strays and … counterattacks !

Judaean Melee Phase:

Ben Yair(6), ben Gurion(3) vs OO26 (Base unit of Escalade)(3.5). 9:3.5 = 2:1/+1,+1,-1 dr: 4+1+1-1 = 5 E Elim 7-8 and remove Escalade. Advance ben Yair into OO26.

Continuous Combat. Ben Yair(6), ben Gurion(3) vs PP26(23). 9:23 = 1:3/+1,+1,-1,-1 dr: 6+1+1-1-1 = 6 B Disrupt Phrygius and Retreat to QQ25.

Continuous Combat. Ben Yair(6), ben Gurion(3) vs PP26(18). 9:18 = 1:2/+1,+1,-1,-1 dr: 4+1+1-1-1 = 4 NE

Ben Giora(4), 5-7(5) vs HH17(14). 9:14 = 1:2/+1,-1 dr: 3+1-1 = 3 NE

5-7(5), 2-6 x 2(2) vs DD19 Fort(12). 7:12 = 1:2/+1 dr: 1+1 = 2 NE

And the final attack of the game comes from ben Levi against the lone 7-8 in a Bastion.

Ben Levi(4), 2-6 x 5(6) vs S30(14). 10:14 Flanked = 20:14 = 1:1/+1,-1 dr: 5+1-1= 5 D Disrupt 7-8 and Elim because he cannot Retreat ! Advance ben Levi into S30 … just because he can.

Done.

What an ending !

The Roman claims a physical Victory with 24 Built-ups and 30+ FHI within the NC. He claims a moral Victory by destroying QQ25.

That was fun ! I will post an After Action Report separately.

Best to all and thanks for your encouragement along the way.

Alan

PS Oh yeah … the Roman lost … 299 VP’s of which 249 VP’s were from combat units.
