I am interested in finding what the users of BGG may consider themselves politically in terms of demographics. The poll ends in 15 days.

Please no one be insulting or offensive to others in the comments below. This poll was designed to gather data for my own personal use. It would be amazing to get 1000+ answers and I have plans for further polls divining this information provided enough activity. Thanks for participating!

Re: Political Leanings and Boardgaming as a hobby in the USA
I suggest you define what you consider light, medium, and heavy gamer. Compared with the general population I would be a medium to probably heavy gamer. Compared with the BGG crowd more a light to maybe medium.

This poll isn't in response to that guy asking about the demographics of everyone's gaming group, ethnicity, and education is it?

Re: Political Leanings and Boardgaming as a hobby in the USA
@ draxx01: Mine is independent of any other inquiries, as I do not know them, being only a rare viewer of RSP forums here. The only demographics I am seeking are politics and gaming as a hobby and a random sampling from the USA from BGG users.

@ windsagio: Anarchism meaning without ruler or overhead ruling system. On the political scale of the Left being larger government, and the Right being smaller government, Anarchism politically lay on the furthest Right side.

@ odie73: My definition of light, medium, and heavy were slightly ambiguous for self interpretation as a gamer. The only comparison being to other hobbies for relativity.

@ rcbevco: I placed it in RSP myself respectfully and purposefully to avoid any problems or difficulties that could arise, since BGG has a low tolerance for mixing of the hobby with other attitudes.

I was going to ask if you meant left/right by American or international standards. Then I saw the "in USA" in the title.

It's fine.

I'll just make my own poll where I can be me.

Oh dear.

Anarchism is mostly of the left. There were fully accepted into the First International. There was a move to exclude them from the Second International - which eventually worked.

Read the Anarchism page on Wikipedia please.

Re: Political Leanings and Boardgaming as a hobby in the USA
@ andyl: left and post left anarchism are modern inventions (within America at least) in an attempt to collect and control (read demagoguery) social anarchists within the USA. I will not debate your possible definition in OTHER political climates, however.

Anarchism of Wikipedia is not a great source, and it is interesting that you incite the First and Second international and ignore Bakunin. All taking place in Europe even, mind you, in an appeal to poll relevance.

Really putting American Anarchism on the side of more/bigger government is almost an Orwellian inversion of ideas, or double speak, if you will. Its the kind of things American universities now promote, for all those fans of intense, indoctrinated, and systematic propaganda.

Again the sliding scale of American politics being used in this poll is largest government on the Left, and smallest government (to none) on the Right. I chose this scale due to historical clarity within America.

RSP poll, which means my special snowflake categorization was not included. An impressive feat, considering how many options were provided.

Re: Political Leanings and Boardgaming as a hobby in the USA
How is far right libertarian?
..and grouping Socialism and Communism is also odd. That's like saying Anglicans and Catholics are the same..

If i could find a box to tick in that (very long) list that I identified with I would.

May I suggest not using labels..
Political;
I believe in a command economy where the government controls/moderates things.
Or
I believe in a free market economy with minimal government control..

Social;
I believe people should have the freedom to do what they want.
Or
I believe the state should manage peoples behavior for our own safety

Gaming;
I enjoy short party games the most.
Or
I enjoy medium length points scoring games the most.
Or
I enjoy long conflict games the most.

I think that's a grid of 12 questions? Still a bit long. But better i guess?..

Ah. I see. So you want to just take, take, take and give nothing in return? Fuck you dude. You need to offer a carrot because in RSP you have no stick.

Re: Political Leanings and Boardgaming as a hobby in the USA
@ antiussentiment: again see the further explanations for the left/right paradigm. Furthest Left being largest government, furthest Right being smallest government.

A lot of Non-USA arguments have arrived over the definition of political leanings. Each one where the center is very far left compared to America to begin with I add. This is why I specified for the USA for this poll. There is a lot of confusion conflating politics from one country to the next.

This poll was created to gather information I am seeking for my own use, but anyone else can use it for their own propaganda. I have a theory about the modern board gaming community and this is a test to see if I am on track or not. This poll and arguments within are an attempt to capture identity politics among the gaming community. It is not empirical or highly scientific nor a case study. but a social dabbing of demographics.

How's whether anarchists were in the 1st/2nd International pertinent? The intellectual framework for libertarianism came in the 1920/1930s with Ayn Rand and the Austrian School. Plus, anarcho-syndicalism, except in Spain and arguably the US, faded on the revolutionary left relative to the Leninist parties.

When people speak of left and right, I sometimes wonder if the whole is circular... Perhaps one way of siting anarchism is within the seething primordial gloop where extremes meet...The extremists at either end of the spectrum have, after all, many shared methods even if their goals seem to diverge.
