For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory

That's right, 7 players NO teams. I played it with the rule you could capture any two opposing pieces.

Oh yes, I tried it, it was insane. Realistically it's impossible to win by making 5 in a row. But it's a good way to force your opponents to do stuff. Making captures was most reliable and trying to place pieces where they wouldn't get captured was almost enough to induce apoplexy. "If I place there I'll get captured by red, if I place there it'll be either blue OR orange depending on who goes first..." Hehe... Definitely makes you think.

I've been playing it that way for years. Lots of fun with groups. Forcing the last two players to block 4 in a row, hoping no one misses what they "have to do", seeing a 5 in a row opened up by a capture, it's wild, chaotic, quick, & fun. Wins are indeed usually by captures but not always - 5 in a row is almost always a surprise and gives the winner a great feeling of cleverness. It's not near as serious as two player but it's fairly quick with several games played back to back. With new players I usually don't play to win but to teach. After a few plays I'll make it harder for them.

Hehe, This is one of those rare games that you can make a game set out of random things. So it's relatively easy to show new people.

Indeed. I had such a hard time finding an official set that I did that too. My first set was stitched canvas (bronze, silver, & gold thread) and glass beads (play in the squares rather than on the lines). My current set consists of a Battlemat™ (26”x23½” /66cm x 60cm) and bags full of PennyGems

I found one at random at a thrift store. But it's basically a board, stones, and rules, not a hard game to make yourself.
