I don't have the time or attention span I did when I was younger, and I just can't bring myself to slog through a 20+ page rule book full of tiny print. Recommend me some games that are heavy on theme and light on rules. Preferably sci-fi or fantasy. 10 pages of rules is probably a good upper limit.

Mechs vs. Minions will introduce the rule as you play it.

The old stand-by, with fairly simple rules:

Ogre

The "Pocket Edition" can still be had for cheap in some places, and a new box set (6th Edition) to complement the huge Kickstarter "Designer's Edition" will be coming out early in 2017.

Legends of Andor is pretty much punch and play. Great introduction scenario for the rules then it explains anything new

If you are looking to scratch the space combat itch then I would suggest GMT's Talon. It is approaching the high side of your complexity curve with 10 pages of rules for the basic game, but a mere 5 pages more for the advanced rules.

It is a very clean system.

I recently jumped into GW black hole... again!

Two games I can recommed are

Warhammer Quest Silver Tower, a fantasy co-op where a bunch of heroes travel through a Chaos-god tower filled with magic, everchanging landscapes and monsters, trying to (physically!) collect the pieces of a broken amulet.

Betrayal at Calth, a sci-fi 1-vs.-1 skirmish with exceptionally good, streamlined yet very tactical ruleset and a bunch of scenarios where loyalist and traitor Space Marines fight each other. Very Space Hulk- style.

Both are quite rules-light (to my standard, extremely light), bucket-of-dice to roll, fast-playing (~1 hour per scenario) and BIGGEST PRO, you can pack them for 1 month, bring them back to the gaming table and (almost) have immediately fun without rules/subrules/exceptions to remember.

BIGGEST CON, there are (gorgeous) plastic models to assemble.

+1 to this, I also did a review where I touched on the learning curve for new people to the game:

I'll also add Star Trek: Catan as it is reimplentation of the classic with sci-fi theme, but with the "Helpers" thrown in (an extra learning element that can be missed out to start if you're after a quick start)
