Looking at picking one of these two up and someone mentioned to me they are similar in gameplay

any thoughts on either of these?

Oh My Goods is the better game, but Port Royal is easier to explain and play. That's how I feel after 2 plays and 6 plays.

I have played both around 10 times...there are some superficial similarities, but they feel very different to me. I prefer Oh My Goods!, but you need to ensure that you are using the updated rules. Port Royal has a much stronger push your luck element while Oh My Goods! has some very satisfying production chains that can happen (easier in the new rules). Port Royal is definitely easier to teach and play (and still quite enjoyable), but I find Oh My Goods! to be a more fulfilling experience.

Where are these rules? Are they in the expansion?

Port Royal has a good expansion which can turn the game into an cooperative one. And they announced a second expansion whivh will have a legacy/ campaign style.

It is our most played game behind Pandemic.

I would recommend Port Royale. It has quite a lot of luck involved and it's simple, but it's fun.
Also, skip Oh My Goods, get Ora et Labora. ) Same illustrations, much deeper (and longer) game. The chains are as satisfying.

Oh my goods has a better campaign mode and storytelling.

I like Oh my Goods more, but Port Royal plays way faster, so it gets far more plays in my group.

If you can get the expansion that still hasn't been released in the U.S.
