What happens to the farmer tile should he/she be so unlucky that a monster spawns right on the field where he/she stands?

Discarded as usual or there is a rule saying that the monster spawns and moves to the next field as all others in my group say to remember?

Happened to us a few days ago:

"I know these farmers need to be escorted to the wedding, but I have this other important thing to take care of first. I'll leave them here in this safe spot for a few hours. There are no monsters for miles around."

Moments later, a troll appears out of nowhere and eats the farmer

"Dang. I guess that spot wasn't so safe after all. Now I can't complete my quest, so we just lost. "

That is an annoying problem in legend 3. I guess you could make a list of all the spaces that monsters spawn into via monster tiles.

I have memorized that one! It is seared into my mind.

I don't remember the details, but there are only 2 or so spaces where monsters never spawn. I think they were listed in the rulebook (maybe in a strategy section or something?)

We were playing the Royal Escort legend (between legends 3 and 4) and the King is dead because a Troll shown up on the same field of the king so it's unfortunate to lose because of luck and even thematically makes no sense unless these monsters are spawning right from the earth...

Thematically, I think it works. Those areas are pretty big, so it's quite possible a monster was lurking (hibernating?) there unnoticed, or came in from the edge of the board but had managed to remain hidden until now. The network of spies that keeps close tabs on all the monsters in the kingdom is impressive, but imperfect.

From a gameplay standpoint, I agree it's not very satisfying. If I were going to try to "fix" it, I would make an exception that if a monster appears on a space containing a farmer AND a hero, the hero can protect the farmer until they are able to escort the farmer out of that space on their next turn.

However, even though we lost a game because of it, I think I'll just live with the rules as they are.

I could go with your suggested variant as it makes even more thematic sense... if the farmer was all alone than he/she could do anything against even a Gor but if a hero is with them then they should be able to survive

But by that logic, a hero should be able to escort a farmer through a space with a monster at any time. And that would be game-breaking.

I suppose you could play it that the monster appears downwind of the farmer. That would penalize the players without completely dooming them. It doesn't really make sense thematically, other than "the spies were mistaken, and the monster is actually HERE".

Or you could play that at the moment the monster appears, if a hero and farmer are in that space, the hero could immediately take an hour out of turn to move with the farmer to an adjacent space. If the hero has already retired for the night, they would not have that option, and the farmer would die. Which makes sense thematically: the monster surprised them while they were asleep.
