The rules are clear that while in a Cautious stance, the only Actions a hero can perform are Guard and Reroll.

My question is, does taking a hero's free movement points count as an Action?

The free movement is described under Move Actions (Heroes' Book page 11), but I think the way it is worded is somewhat ambiguous: "once per Action phase, a hero can gain a number of movement points equal to their movement value if the hero has not yet performed a Move during that phase." It doesn't explicitly state that a Move action is required.

I would argue that since you're not spending gems it isn't technically an Action, and so a hero in a Cautious stance could still move their base movement, but could not spend gems for any additional movement.

Thematically you could justify this with the idea that a cautious hero might move slowly through an area, but wouldn't run or storm about.

Thoughts?

To summarize about half a dozen other threads which cover this in gross detail:

No. No movement, "free" nor otherwise.

Yes. It is part of the Action descriptions.

Now, I am probably wrong (and would be happy to be wrong because just standing there is resting, not being cautious).

I am toying with the idea of granting a two Energy bonus if the figure takes NO actions while Cautious (yeah, right!).

I believe originally it was called active/passive stance. which in my opinion covers it better than the current description. Then again, don't forget, this is a boardgame and not a RPG or a "real-live-simulation". don't get hung up on semantics. the translation is not very good and there are many other such details that leave much room for interpretation...
