My request is specific to a two player only game.

My wife and I have tried reading the game instructions and can't figure this out. I've also read some threads in this forum, watched some videos, looked at the "Updated rules revised by TDaver" and these didn't help either. No one really seems to have a walk through, or painfully clear instructions.

Please help.

Have you tried the first or the second ed rules? You can see the second ed rules here http://ludicreations.com/product/redacted/, they are a bit better.

If that doesn't help, ask specific questions here, and I'll try to answer them.

Have you made any progress on the instructional video you mentioned you were going to make last year?

I was young and naive Every day I have two less days of free time. Maybe, as a new year's resolution I'll try again.

I'm so sorry for disappointing anyone who expected that video of me, I've never made a video for anything, maybe I should start.

Thanks. I hope I didn't come across wrong when I asked that.

Hey Mark, I will attempt to fulfill your request and provide you with a step by step procedure to get you playing this awesome game and hopefully you'll be on your way to experiencing what the 2 player game has to offer. It's actually a fantastic 2 player game. Because I'm going to make an attempt to be detailed as possible, this explanation will probably sound complicated, but it's really not.

This message with self destruc... See what I did there!

Game Board

Place the game boards on the table with the ground floor board (the one with the Ballroom) in between the Terrace (the one with the Helipad) and the Basement (the one with the Radio).

Interaction Cards

Let's look at the interaction cards (Black backed cards containing neutral, friendly, brass knuckles, knives, garrottes and loyalties). Remove all loyalties and put them back in the box, they will not be used.

Create you and your partner's starting hand of cards. Each player's starting hand will consist of 1 friendly, 1 neutral, 1 brass knuckle, 1 knife, and 1 garrotte.

At this point you can place all of the other friendly and neutral cards back in the box, they will not be used.

Shuffle the remaining brass knuckles, knives, and garrottes (the game refers to these as attack cards) and this deck will be placed next to the board. This is the Armoury Deck.

Item Cards

First remove from the items cards (red backed cards): Both Briefcases, both Bombs, both Code Crackers, both Night Vision Goggles, all 4 Alliance letters (they say 3 inside the silhouette of a player at the bottom of the card and are only used in the 3 player mission), 1 red floppy disk, 1 blue floppy disk (Both of these floppy disks are only used in the 4 player intro mission), 1 Contraband, and finally 1 Intel. Put all these back in box, they will not be used.

Since there are no Briefcases in the deck, there will be no Briefcase set-up nor any Briefcase tiles in play.

Construct the Objective Deck by shuffling together: 1 Intel, the 1 VIP file, 1 Microfilm, and 1 Grey Floppy disk together. After that's all mixed up complete the Objective Deck by placing 1 Intel on the bottom. Place this next to the board.

Shuffle all the remaining items cards together and place them next to the board. This is your Items Deck.

In the 2 player game you do not draw an item at the beginning.

Guards

Simply shuffle the 3 Guard Weapons cards (light black backs) and place the packet next to the board.

Next, shuffle the 8 Alert cards (yellow and black striped backs) and place them next to the board.

Tokens, Tiles, and Meeples

In addition to the Red and Blue agent meeples, you will need the 4 black Guard meeples, and the 1 gray VIP meeple.

The tokens you will need are: 7 red point tokens, 7 blue point tokens, and 1 Green Jamming token

As far as tiles go, give you and your opponent 1 Items tile and 1 Rooms Tile for easy reference and you only need 1 Helicopter tile in play (nationality does not matter).

Optional but Recommended

In a two player game the Security HQ, Ballroom, Central Lock, Computer, and Breaker Rooms are treated as empty rooms and cannot be activated for a special function. What I do is place small coins (or something similar that doesn't mark up the board) onto those rooms as a reminder of this fact.

Let's Go!

Finally the last thing that needs to happen, for set-up to be complete, is to decide which agent will start out in the Telex and which agent will start out in the Tunnel. Place your agent meeples accordingly and just know that where you start out at is your hideout and will be for the remainder of the game!

In Conclusion...

I hope this helps you out Mark as well as anybody else that has not tried the 2 player mission yet.

Well Deserved Praise

This is off topic but I just wanted to throw this out there. I am in complete awe of the design of the game and how this all comes together in play! No matter if I played with 2, 3, 4, or even 5 players (not played with 6 yet), the games and moments have been wonderful and above all memorable. Easily one of my very favorites. Thank you to David Turczi, Mihaly Vincze, Katalin Nimmerfroh and everybody else behind the scenes for giving me those moments and memories.

It's responses like this why we design games!
Thanks, and enjoy! (have you tried [redacted]: Mercenaries, [redacted]: Garden Party?)

I have tried and absolutely love Mercenaries! In a couple weeks from now I planned on getting Garden Party and I am very pleased to hear about Identity as well.

[redacted] is definitely one of those games that I will continue to support for as long as I can. I love everything about it. I can't say enough about it. I'm very happy it exists and I look forward to many future games of [redacted]!

A sincere thank you to you too David! I'm also very much looking forward to Anachrony and Steal This Game. I know I'm laying it on pretty thick here, but what can I say, I'm a fan!

David THANK YOU so much for your help it's greatly appreciated!

I've put off playing this game (and I just love anything spy related) to play other games I could more easily understand. This games looks like a lot of fun.

**Update. Well I got the game set up.

I'm guessing that the rest of the left over red cards become an "items deck" that you both draw from when you go to certain rooms?

Both of us have read through all the paperwork. We can not figure out how you even obtain an objective card during game play. Also can't figure out when the VIP gets placed on the board and how that works. Will try re-reading to figure this out.

Not a problem at all Mark! I noticed in another thread that you've been having this issue since 2015 and I figured I was in a position to shed some light on it, so I did.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the experience and since you love anything spy related, like me, I know you will absolutely love this as well.

I'd go so far as to say this game goes beyond a spy "theme", but almost goes into the territory of a really good RPG. It's not just a theme in this one, in order to be successful, you must think like a spy would and act accordingly. You will also be faced with a lot of interesting choices to make along the way.

If you have any questions at all about any of the rules regarding the 2 player game, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to answer them.

Enjoy!

Hello again Mark. Sorry for the late reply! I just noticed that you had an update to this post.

You are correct about the Items Deck, any red cards that I listed that did not compromise the Objective Deck, become the Items Deck. You can draw a card from the Items Deck whenever you visit and use an action to activate one of the Storage Rooms. There is one on the Terrace section of the game board and one in the Basement section.

Objective Cards are brought into play through the Guards. Whenever you place a new Guard meeple you always check to see if there is any Guard on the board that has an objective attached, if not, then you attach an Objective Card face down to the new Guard you place. Therefore, during the game there can only be at most 1 Objective at a time on the board.

To obtain this Objective you have to have a successful interaction with the Guard that has it attached. Interacting with Guards is where those light grey Guard Weapons cards come in to play. You draw one of those three cards at random and place it face down in front of you. So, if this is your first interaction with a Guard, you have no idea whether he will use a knife, garrotte, or brass knuckles against you. You then play one of your attack interaction cards face down and then compare the two to see who won. If things did not go in your favor you could use any Combat items that you have to either tilt the odds in your favor or lessen the damage caused.

Win, tie, or lose, whatever the case you will discard the Guards Weapons card into their own private discard pile face down, just like you do with your own attack cards. This way, if you have to deal with this Guard again, you will have a better idea how to beat him, while your opponent will still be in the dark.

Whenever this Guards Weapons deck runs out, shuffle the three cards, thus making a new Guard Weapons deck.

If you tie the Guard in this interaction, you have to Sneak Out.

If you lose this interaction, in addition to sneaking out, you must discard a random red Item card from your hand. If you have no red Item cards in your hand then you are injured by the Guard.

If you win this interaction, in addition to removing that Guard from the board, you can as an action pick up the Objective that was attached to him and add it to you hand. If the Objective that you receive is the VIP File you immediately reveal it, remove it from the game, and place the VIP meeple in the Ballroom. From this point forward anyone can try to complete the Escort the VIP Objective for 3 points! Notice that because that Objective card is removed from the game after it's found, it can only be completed once during the game.

Hope this makes sense and that it helps!
