I want something that has a decent work area (say 8.5 x 11 or so?) and can cut acrylic, wood and engrave etc..

Is there a decent one I can buy, say 40w or so for under $400?

I'd be very interested in hearing your experiences once you get it and have it running!

FWIW, I wrote up some of my experiences with the same model in this post the other day:

My favourite thing with it is on an old Altoids tin lid that I'd sanded, primed and then sprayed with black enamel. With the right cutting time the laser removes the black enamel paint from the top, leaving the grey primer beneath - it's a really nice look, and since the primer and the paint are both really durable it's not going anywhere either.

I attacked the shallowest cut I made on a die with sandpaper and it still showed pretty clearly:

I'd expect them to last much longer than the screenprinted faces you get in some commercial games, put it that way.

Can't wait to get this lil' engraver Thanks.

I'll share some photos of some dice I print.

I want to print a few "heads/tails" dice on a d6, where there are three dragon heads and 3 dragon tails
