I'm planning my Christmas shopping list and I'd like to get my friends some unusual games (unusual theme, mechanics, win conditions, etc.). I'm hoping for four different hidden gems that are preferably still in print. I have a budget of about $40 per person. I'm open to any ideas. Thanks!

Pax Porfiriana. Something like 270 unique cards, it comes in a tiny box but is remarkably heavier than anything else in its size category. Win conditions are difficult to explain, but essentially when a Topple Card comes up, once it leaves play (or is chosen by a player) a check is made. Players win if their owned, relevant symbols are greater than 4 + the number of relevant symbols on the players with the fewest symbols cards. So if I need loyalty and have 7 Loyalty cards, and the two players with the least Loyalty have 1 apiece, 4+2 = 6; I win! The catch is that the "take that" cards give those winning symbols! But the second catch is that those "take that" cards can target YOURSELF. It's a ridiculous game. And amazing.

Not really a hidden gem, but definitely a quirky game: Mord im Arosa.

IMO, in that MSRP range:

K2 - Unusual Theme, mountain climbing.
Manila - Unusual Theme - racing boats to sell goods to a market, betting on the final positioning of the boats.
Samurai: The Card Game - Different Win Condition, you don't take the highest set of points, but the sum of your 2 lowest. (I believe the designer, Knizia, does this also with some of his other games)
Lanterns: The Harvest Festival - Unusual Theme - its a pasted on theme, but building fireworks displays is pretty unusual
Hanabi - Unusual Mechanic (at least at the time). Blind card hands, cooperative game. (similar theme, building fireworks, but that's the only similarity) You can get the non-deluxe version pretty cheaply, but since you had the $40 price range, I upgraded you to the deluxe version.

I am actually bundling the regular version of Hanabi with Codenames, for our family gift exchange (total is ~$25).

Unusual mechanics seem to be most easily found in dexterity games. I would look at:

Loony Quest
Cube Quest
Safranito

It's a quirky, diceless push-your-luck game that should be within $40.

I would say that Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is certainly unusual (both in mechanics and win conditions) and is available for $40. But not exactly an oddball theme or a "hidden gem" (it has 7.6k reviews on BGG).

thumbsup Kolejka Standing in line in Communist Poland to get toilet paper. What could be better? Although hard to find now, so may not work--but there is a free print-n-play if that works.

De Vulgari Eloquentia. Traveling through Italy to help create a new national language. Hard to learn this one but it's a favorite

Plus 1 for Tragedy Looper. It's also the best deduction game i've ever played.

I'd also add Code of Nine by the same designer as a very unique game that i really like.

Safranito is an interesting take on dexterity games.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective offers a bit of a unique experience.

Cash 'n Guns: Live is pretty cool for larger groups as well.

Space Alert can be crazy real-time fun, if the group enjoys losing repeatedly.
