Previously : Rhineland reoccupied, Ethiopia conquered, Japan invades China and defeats the Nationalists, Anschluss, Russian purges, Spanish Civil War stalemates, CW and France establish new Entente Cordiale, Persia conquered, Germany and Italy sign a second pact, Czechoslovakia sacrificed, Bessarabia seized, Finland attacked, Germany conquers Belgium and Denmark and forces Vichy France. Italy declares war on the CW and the Free French. The US declares war on Japan who subsequently declares war on the CW and quickly conquers most of the CW possessions East of Delhi. The Germans conquer Poland and Iraq. The Japanese conquer China and Australia.

Apologies for the gap in reporting. I’ve started a new job recently and negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU is proving more time consuming than I imagined when I answered the advert in the back of Auto Trader.

July August 1941

Politics. Italy offer a pact to Germany. CW get 24 bid points. The US play their owed declaration of war against Germany. The Germans go for two options – first their owed DoW against Poland and then to accept the … er … oh no they’ve finished the turn by rolling too low, Andy P mistakenly used his search roll die.

Democrats win initiative and move first – repositioning various boats around the world and smuggling a US MOT corps into Sydney. The US sub in the Coral Sea sinks a Japanese CP.

Communists shuffle in anticipation (maybe) of a German/Turkish attack.

Germany go naval which has some in the room scratching their heads, subs & Nav to the Bay of Biscay and several rounds of combat, 2 subs sunk & 1 damaged but the CV Ranger is also damaged and 6 convoys are sunk. The Allies withdraw and the convoy lines to the UK are temporarily broken.

It’s the Battle of the Western Med XXX! Italian Fleet Rapido catches the CV Implacable alone and sinks it, aborting out the Penelope and Leander, and the convoy setting up supply to Suez. Laurence Churchill is finding nothing at the moment. But he has managed to sneak a CW INF through the IJN blockade of India.

The Japanese launch a long shot invasion of Wellington with aim of knocking New Zealand out of the war, but come up short on a +4 odds by rolling 8. Church bells are rung throughout the country. Fortunately the US had repositioned a corps preventing a more simple landing and the Japanese could see the window of opportunity fading fast so had to take a risk.

The turn continues and the Democrats move more troops about trying to patch holes. The CW initiates combat in the Western Med and as usual the search rolls heavily favour the Italians (2 vs 10). Yet more CW ships go down as Greg makes his key damage rolls. Mario and Cairo are sunk and Trinidad, Augusto and Illustrious are damaged. Next round, the Victorious is sunk and Greg has his hair slightly put out of place (but no ships damaged). Another round and the CW planes eventually get their act together and shoot down one and abort the other Italian land based NAVs. However the CW planes don’t get past the Italian AA. Another round starts and Greg returns to search roll supremacy.

The Western Med engagement rattles on and Greg’s Italians have the edge on die rolls and avoid Air combat on two occasions before the CW finally get a result and have 1 point of surprise which allows the planes to fly, skip past the AA and sink the CV Aquila. However by the time this happens, the Italians have sunk the Dragon, the Galatea, the Sussex and the Dunedin – therefore eating through all the CW light cruisers, although in return the Barbiano is sunk. Finally reduced to 3 boats Rapido leaves the field and the bloodied remains of Force H hold station. An Italian victory in terms of metal sunk but Laurence at least feels he is taking it to the enemy.

The CW plan to capitalize on this victory with the follow up hit in Egypt is stymied by a lack of supply – bugger – but never mind, time to do something in India. Ah no supply there either, double bugger.

Two impulses later the CW do manage to create supply to the Eastern Med by scraping the necessary CPs from somewhere and with no supply for Italy the Armour rolls forward and Blitz 3 Italian units off (which are changed to a retreat) and the CW for now have won the first battle of Alamein.

Gosh that was exciting. If you close your eyes and whistle you could almost believe the Democrats are still in this war.

I am the Japanese and as I remember the weather in India was poor - I was trying to set up an attack towards Delhi and in spite of having 3 HQ in theatre couldn't maintain supply, so I think winston/Laurence may have been suffering from the same issues. Or he forgot India was a primary supply source, one of the two.
