Hey All,

Since I love Arcane Academy and don't always have a group to play the game, I decided to create an Automa that keeps to the spirit of multiplayer. I've played 10 games with this rule set and I'm running a 50% win rate in the normal mode. In the works is an extended version that brings the game time up to 30-40 minutes versus the 20 minutes this version takes to allow you to build up a stronger engine.

Please share your thoughts and experiences as I'm always looking for ways to fine tune the rules.

Dstanley’s Arcane Academy Automa

OBJECTIVE

Score more points than the Automa in 12 rounds of play. There are no limits to how many assignments the Automa or player can complete in the 12 rounds. Play time is around 20 minutes.

SETUP

Setup the game just as you would a standard two player game. Align the Automa player slate and resources next to yours as you will need to lay tiles and adjust its resources each round. Lay the three cards dealt to the Automa face up under their slate. The Automa starts with 3 will and 3 shards.

PLAYER TURN

The Player’s turn will follow the same rules as a standard 2 player game. The player is always the first player and acts before the Automa each round.

AUTOMA PHASES

Phase 1: The Automa Takes a Tile

Take the bottom tile from the tile offering and place it on the top left most action space on the Automa player slate (The first tile will cover the cast or complete assignment action space). On its next turn the Automa will cover the next available space moving left to right in the current row. Do this until the 12 spaces on the slate are covered.

Note: Each time a tile is removed from the public offering the current tiles in the offering move down so that the new tiles drawn from the bag always appear at the top.

Phase 2: The Automa Gains a Resource

The Automa gains resources according to the round table below:

ROUND RESOURCE
ROUND 1: 1 Shard
ROUND 2: 1 Will
ROUND 3: 1 Shard
ROUND 4: 1 Will
ROUND 5: 1 Shard
ROUND 6: 1 Will
ROUND 7: 1 Shard
ROUND 8: 1 Will
ROUND 9: 1 Shard
ROUND 10: 1 Will
ROUND 11: 1 Shard
ROUND 12: 2 Will, 2 Shard

Phase 3: Automa Completes Assignments (Every Third Round)

Every third round (Round 3, 6, 9, and 12) the Automa completes assignments until they are out of resources. You can keep track of rounds by counting the tiles on the Automa board. The Automa completes assignments as follows:

1.The Automa will complete assignments that cost shards until they can no longer meet the resource requirements. The Automa will complete assignments that cost will until they can no longer meet the resource requirements.
2.The Automa will select the card with the highest available prestige from their private assignments or the public offering.
3.As soon as a private assignment or public assignment is complete, refresh the card. If the new card meets the preceding criteria, the Automa will complete it in its current turn.

Note: The Automa will build as many 0 value resource assignments as it can during its Complete Assignment Phase.

Breaking ties:

If one or more cards cost the same resource and grant the same prestige the Automa will complete the assignments in the following order.

1. Card effects that grant additional prestige
2. Card effects that grant additional resources
3. Card effects that have a negative impact on the player
4. Player discretion

Phase 4: Automa Carries Out Card Effects.

The Automa carries out the effects shown on the recently completed assignments. These include gaining prestige tokens and resources as well as negative effects to the player. Any resources obtained in this phase cannot be used by the Automa. The Automa must wait for its next Complete Assignment Phase to utilize the resources obtained.

Note: the only exception to this rule is if it is the last turn in round 12, the Automa will gain and utilize any resources available before scoring.

Item Effects:

Items/Spells that require a choice: If an item or spell requires a choice of the player, it is up to the player’s discretion which one they act out. For example, “Eye of Dissonance” will allow the player to take 1 shard from the Automa OR put 1 prestige token on the item. If the item or spell requires a choice of the Automa it is up to the player whether they want to pay the Automa otherwise the Automa will take a prestige token.

Items/Spells that require opponent exhaustion: The Automa is not impacted by exhaustion. If the Automa completes an assignment that causes exhaustion, the player must exhaust one or more of their tiles as directed by the card.

Items/Spells that remove tiles: Spells like "Combustion" can be used to remove a tile from the Automa slate. The tile removed must always be the last tile placed on their slate. This action grants the player more time to develop their engine and delay the Automa from arriving at their Complete Assignment Phase. On its next turn, the Automa will repeat the resource gathering phase of the removed tile. (If you remove the 7th tile, the Automa gains a second shard in a row instead of moving to round 8 and gaining a will. The number of tiles on the Automa slate always dictate the round and the resource it gathers).

Important: If you utilize "Combustion", it is possible for the Automa to re-enter the Complete Assignment Phase.

Specific Card Impacts on the Automa

The Automa will rarely select the cards below due to their cost / prestige ratio. However, if the Automa does select the card, please see below for their effect on the game.

Gloves of Stolen Dreams: The Automa gains the resources each time you rest.

Dimensional Puzzle Box: The Automa does not receive an additional private assignment

Doubling Cube: The Automa will select the item with the most prestige tokens.

Refine: This action will take place in Phase 4, so regardless of when refine is played the Automa will receive the benefit on all its items.

Materwork Tools: The Automa will only use this card’s effect only after it has used all its available resources. If by using the card effect the Automa can complete additional assignments, it will.

Rod of Psychomancy: The Automa gains 1 additional shard and will to complete additional assignments, if possible.

Adjusting the Difficulty:

ROUND 7: 1 Shard
ROUND 8: 1 Will

Thanks Michael! Please let me know your thoughts once you tried it out. I'm really enjoying it!

While it may seem like a lot of text the Automa turn outside of its complete assignment phase usually takes 30 seconds or so.
