Just pulled the game out tonight for a couple games. Wanted to verify a couple things.

-If playing with them all face-up, you can buy ANY hero not just the first 5?

-When you buy a Hero that has a build power you can use it that same turn (like can buy a Legion for 1 coin)?

Thanks
Wakrob

laugh But if you're playing with all of the extra heroes from Atlantis, Kickstarter, (all three Labyrinthines), the three Legendary Cities Atlas modules, and now the brand new hero expansion "Heroes of the Bible" optionally included with the upcoming War and Peace marker packet, then even if you are limiting the available buys to 17 Heroes and Wonders at a time selected from all of these, something else might happen before you can use them...

...YOUR BRAIN MIGHT EXPLODE! surprise

Yea - it may be a little overwhelming!

We still stick to the 5 heroes/wonders revealed. The thing is that people immediately go for the combat heroes when everything is revealed. Most favourite are Nebuchadnezzar, Ramses II and Aeneas for the bonusses and Achilles and Chiron so you can have a land army of 8+ units.

Thaddeus,

Just as you can customize any particular game by deciding which Legendary Cities modules to use (or hey, just use their leaders), you can also just take the combat leaders out of your mix, since there are so heroes/wonders to choose from if you use them all (who says you have to be playing Atlantis to use the Atlantean heroes?). That might open up your group more to winning other ways, and make a nice game variation for you.

Anyone can vary the initial mix of 17 for his/her own player group. Although at my house, combat leaders are certainly not considered the best road to victory all the time!

meeple Since we'll be playing next the day before Christmas on my own birthday, I imagine Jesus will mysteriously find his way into the mix!

Well the thing is that in the 1st part of the game players watch each other and may take an occasional beneficial cultural or trade upgrade.
But once people start to recruit military leaders and build a few legions the Arms Race begins. And recruiting heroes with good combat bonusses is the best way to prepare yourself for an upcoming combat. Legions are expendable - but hero bonusses are lasting.

Yersterday we did a 5-player game. Greece recruited Aeneas in turn 1 and Chiron in turn 3. No way his neighbours were considering buying Dido, Temple of Artemis or the Hanging Gardens when Ramses was available.
