How important is it to have a great wealth is AOS III? In Puerto Rico and Caylus you need a healthy amount of $ to get things moving, is it like that in AOS III as well?

You definitely need money to get things moving (or more precisely to buy powerful Capital Buildings). However its not everything as a healthy dose of additional units per turn (to power actions) is the other currency of acquisition. How important each is depends on what the other players do and who is putting together what combinations of assets.

As Ray says, there are several paths to victory. This said, a strong economy has several benefits:

1) Money for Capital Buildings. Capital Buildings translate into powerful upgrades to your colonists (and thereby your actions). Capital Buildings can also translate into money and victory points.

2)Your economy at the end of the game also counts for victory points.

One powerful path to victory is:

Trade goods --> Money --> Capital Buildings --> More Money, Actions, Victory Points --> Powerful Economy --> Victory Points

When you say 'AOS III', do you mean Age of Empires III, Age of Discovery? Because AOS III looks like an abbreviation for Age of Steam Third Edition...

You do not need "great" wealth but definately money helps throughout game be it in training settlers or buying capital buildings. Particularly at 3rd Age, buying the right capital building which gives you most points for your strategy definately is very helpful.

Having said all that, if you have adequate money for say 3-4 capital buildings throughout the game, this may be more than adequate to win if other strategies work well.

Economy generated from "income" phase during the last turn worth VPs, not the amount of coins that you have.

If you get the capital building "Wealth" it does. It is worth 1VP for every $5 you have.
