It's seven years old and not much more than a clickfest, but it's still the PC game I play the most. Why? Because it's not a bad time-waster and I'm too cheap to upgrade my PC every three weeks to play whatever the new hotness is (not that the new hotness is anyothing other than RTS, MMORPG, or FPS, but that's another story.)

It's DIABLO II!

I know I'm not the only one here that still plays this sucker.

Right now I just started a Druid, because I'd never played one before. Not sure what to do with him. I think I'm going to focus of him summoning plants and changing into a werewolf. Any tips? What kinds of weapons should I be looking for for him?

When I bought my laptop last January I drug out D2 Lord of Destruction myself.

When my old PC died 2004 I lost 8 characters between level 72 and 93. My Druid was a lot of work to play as a werewolf / summoner.

Currently I am playing around with 9 characters:

These have beaten the game on normal and are into Nightmare. Currently Levels 35 to 42

Amazon: Bow skills mostly
Amazon: Passive and Magic Skills ONLY!
Paladin: Fanatic Zealot
Barbarian: Double Swinger
Assassin: MArtial Arts and Claws
Sorceress: Fire and Ice

These were late bloomers and are still in Normal Diff. Levels 20 to 24.

Necromancer: Boner
Necromancer: Summon/Revive
Druid: Summon

But Peta, my Druid, is sinking the most points into Summoning. I wanted to see how far Ravens and Dire Wolves would carry a Druid.

Right now, at level 20 in Act 3 Normal Difficuly, 5 RAvens, 3 Dire Wolves and his Desert Mercenary w/ defensive Aura are handling 95% of the killing. Even the Act II boss was a piece of cake when I used my Merc and Wolves as meat shields while replenishing my Wolves and Birds. I don't think Peta even had to swing at Duriel the Truck.

Granted I found a helm that gives him entry level Shape Shifting but I'm not putting points in it.

Another nice thing about Diablo II is that it runs nicely on my laptop, along with Civ III and Pirates! Most of the newer games don't, since they require a video card that won't fit into my budget or my laptop.

After reading this thread I had to level up my Peta, my Druid.

As you know, in werewolf form you get all the attributes of whatever weapon (or armor/shield) you are carrying except for ranged attack ability. Then, as a melee character you'd look for the same types of weapons as any melee character.

Any item that gives you at least 1 Cold damage is valuable. I like Charms for that since it works with any weapon. A weapon that leeches Life and Mana is good too.

For the moist part I prefer fast one handed weapons and a shield versus a big slow two hander.

As you know, there are specialist helms for Druids and some weapons will give Druid specific bonuses. IIRC, they are usually clubs or axes.

Peta has a helm that gives him 1 to Werewolf, 3 to Lycanthropy and 1 to Raven, so I do melee in werewolf form. I have a Charm that gives me 1 or 2 Cold and I carry a staff that gives me 100% Monster Flee. Thus when I do have to hit a normal monster it always runs away very slowly and my Ravens or Wolves run it down and kill it.

wow...you guys have taken me back five years...I was doing my AS levels and playing Diablo II on someone else's computer (at boarding school). I had a sorceress who was heavily into fire spells, I think. She only got to level 20 or so, since there's limit to how much you can play on another person's computer...

Good ol' Diablo, the quest to get better stuff. I was really addicted to this game. I would put in at least three 8 - 10 hour sessions of this game per week.

Doing Meph runs until dawn. Good stuff.

I would still play Diablo II but it makes my computer crash. I should try it again now that I've replaced my graphics card last week. My favorite D2 character - and my favorite RPG-ish character for any PC game - was my Dire Wolf summoning Druid Touch My Puppy. Powerful thru Nightmare, useless in Hell.

I'm SO "ye olde skool"~"How 'ye olde skool' are YOU?"
I'm so "ye olde skool" that I'll even play plain DIABLO and even the "Hellfire" add-on for that. They have the "MONK" guy for this too, along with several other NEW "Quests" for around the "shire". I also liked where you could bring UP your levels for everything with *Magical* items, so my guy could USE many more than he usually would be capable with. He even got to choose between several weapon types such as swords & shields or staves and Magic.

Yeah, I had Diablo and Hellfire, too. I remember spell scrolls and the much more voluptuous bat winged babes. The succubi in D2 are crack whores or anorexic runway models by comparison.

In D2 Bowazons are my favorite. To paraphrase that old Pinkard & Bowden tune, "There Ain't Nothing Funny 'Bout a Woman with a Bow."

Between the Hitters and Shooters, (don't spoonerize that) I'll take a shooter. Especially with when fronted by a Desert Merc and a level 20 Valkerie.

I have it and while I think the theme is great, I find the gameplay to be sorely lacking. The NPCs are utterly useless and braindead (one will continually heal you until he falls unconscious from fatigue). There are something like 80 spells available in the game, but there's never any reason to use more than like four of them, and all of those are very low-level spells. It's been a while but I remember that of the two paths you can go by, magic or technology, one is insanely powerful and one is stupidly useless. It seemed like a good idea that deserves a better game attached to it.

Best Druid build I ever did was pretty heavily gear dependant, but suh-weet none the less. Go straight warewolf. Put points into str only. NO DEX. I repeat NO DEX. Get yourself all of the Immortal Kings set minus the helm. You'll slice through hell like buttah. The maul is fast for Druids, and has no dex requirement. You get a dmg bonus for every 100 str, so go for 400+. Here's the best part: With all but the helm from IK, you get massive elemental bonuses on the maul in fire, lightning, cold, and poison.

You'll want, in addition to the IK set, anything that will increase your attack rating, though your warewolf skills go a long way toward that end naturally. You'll also want lots of +life and +life/mana steal. For pets, I'd stick with oak sage, carrion vine, and dire wolf. Don't put any points into elemental skills. Fury is your main attack.

Oh, one last pointer... never... ever... attack anything that can cast iron maiden on you. You'll kill yourself in one hit. If you have to, transform out of wolf form and use a crappy weapon to do it.

It's not about the combat. It's about the gameplay. One of the best RPGs ever, IMO. Real replayability, unlike Baldur's Gate, which is supposedly oh so good.

Eric, Legomancer is a Diablo II fan...a pretty extreme fan given he's still playing after the children conceived when the game first came out have started school... of course he's more interested in combat than gameplay! Diablo II is almost nothing but combat, point-and-click, click-and-click... there's also the min-maxing of course. Actual gameplay is laughable.

The discussion was about Arcanum, not Diablo. Diablo is all about the loot and coming up with interesting character builds.

I didn't find the gameplay to be that compelling. I love the idea behind it, and I liked the world, but I found the implementation to be pretty weak. I always thought that if they came out with an Arcanum 2, it would be really good because they could possibly fix up some of the roughness of the original.

I know you were tallking about Arcanum: the discussion however follows the thread title, which is fairly unambiguous I was making a cross-connection between one game and another. Anyway, Diablo is 90% about pointing and clicking. The loot and character build is something to do in the spare 10%...

That won't be happening, as Troika is now defunct. When I said gameplay, I was talking mostly about the story and the dialogue, not the character building. Although the premise of magik vs technology had a lot of potential.

Diablo and sons are about building and continuing to upgrade a weapons system built on a chassis that for the most part has a pre-determined build path. I wish a Barbarian Mage was doable.

That said, I love it for its pace and minimal decision making. I'll play other games if I want to think very much.

Right now I'm trying to play an Amazon who only puts points in Passive and Magic and carries a sword/mace/axe and shield. NO BOWS. NO SPEARS or JAVELINS. It's tough.

Arcanum was based Fallout, I think. I was hoping for more of a Diablo with guns and spells but I found it clunky and boring to play.

Anybody want to get back on track re: Diablo Druids?

So after reading some advice here I ditched Buggleboo the Druid. I had put some points into plant summoning and hadn't looked ahead far enough: the plants suck. So now I have Uvula the Druid who will focus on turning into a wolf and summoning wolves.

Where do I want to be putting my ability points? Strength and Energy?
