Due to some questions about the different versions of Machiavelli, I decided to make an overview of the various editions:

Machiavelli Battleline Edition (1977)

The Battleline edition has a box without a yellow rectangle in the bottom right corner of the lid.

The Mapboard is unmounted and has colored countries. On the right hand bottom there is a Battleline logo in the Ionian sea visible.

The rulebook has black and white drawings of medieval weapons on the front.

There is a white and grey pad with game orders and the Player Aid cards with game tables are light blue

Machiavelli 1st Edition (= 1st edition 1980)

The 1st edition has a box with a with a yellow rectangle in the bottom right corner of the lid. The text reads "Avalon Hill" with address, logo and 1980 as year. The box contents are (according to me, but I don't own this edition) more or less the same as the Battleline Edition, although you can find different interpretations of this version on the web (which is in most cases the 1983 AH version).

The Rules Manual has drawings of various weapons on the frontpage, like the 1977 Battleline edition. The gameboard has countries with different colors, is mounted on two cardboard panels and has no Battleline logo in the Ionian sea.

1st edition Gameboard

The Player Aid/Conference map (with tables and a map) is light blue, like the Battleline edition and 4 are included in the box. Also included is a Pad with Orders.

Machiavelli Edition 1.5 (= 2nd edition 1983)

The 1.5 edition from 1983 is much the same as the first AH edition of 1980. The Box is the same and has the familiar yellow rectangle on the front with the "The Avalon Hill" text, address and logo (and 1980 as year...). The Manual has a red front page with a white banner and a '2nd Edition 1983' text on front. Curiously, at the bottom of the front page a ©1980 date is printed, apparently referring to the 1st edition.
The Player Aid/Conference map has a different color and is brown and ocher, and only 1 is included (the rulebook states 4, but that refers to the 1st edition from 1980).

The Machiavelli 1.5 Edition (1983) has the following Box and Box contents:

1 Box: 363 x 286 x 30 mm box

1 Rules Manual (including scenarios), red cover with 2nd Edition 1983 printed on front, 20 pags, 275 x 202 mm

1 Gameboard, with eight 272 x 198 mm folded panels (mounted mapboard), making a 544 x 792 mm big gameboard. The countries are all green colored and have colored borders (they don't have various colors as in the first 1980 edition).

1 Pad with Orders (Machiavelli order Sheet), 278 x 203 mm

1 brown/ocher thin cardboard Player Aid card, 278 x 202 mm,printed on both sides
Front: Conference map, with 6 tables (sequence of play, country abbreviations, military orders, expense table, fixed income, variable income)

Note: the game manual says that there are 4 conference maps included, but there was only 1 Player Aid card in my box (confirmed by other owners of this edition).
The map itself is 139 x 202 mm big and contains the left half of the front page of the Player Aid.

Machiavelli 2nd Edition (= 2nd edition 1995)

The 2nd edition is quite different from the 1st and 1.5 edition from 1980 and 1983. The box has changed from a flat big box to a smaller bookcase box. Also, the map and rules are changed. The Manual has no year banner on the front, but the head of the Venetian general Bartolomeo Colleoni(as depicted on the box cover)

Comparing the game credits in both the 1.5 edition(1983, pag. 9) and the 2.0 edition (1995, page 19) the 1995 second edition was developed by Ben Knight and Mark Simonitch. The 1.0 edition (1980) was developed by S. Craig Taylor and the 1.5 edition (1983) was developed by Bruce Milligan and Mick Uhl. See the picture below for the differences:

Text fragments from the rulebooks of the 1.5 (1983) and 2.0 (1995) editions: note the differences (click to enlarge).

The Machiavelli 2nd Edition (1995) has the following Box and Box contents:

1 Box: 290 x 213 x 50 mm box, with the head of the Venetian general Bartolomeo Colleoni.

No, it is not the head of Machiavelli himself! The head is from a big sculpture, a general on his horse, by Andrea del Verrocchio, a famous Italian sculptor and painter. In 1475 Bartolomeo Colleoni, the former Captain General of the Republic of Venice, died. By his will he left a substantial part of his estate to the Republic on the condition that a statue of himself should be set up in the Piazza San Marco. In 1479 the Republic announced that it would accept the legacy and a competition was arranged to enable a sculptor to be selected. In 1483 the contract was awarded to Andrea del Verrocchio and he started to make a clay model which was ready to be cast in bronze. Unfortunately he died in 1488, before the casting was done. After some considerable delay Alessandro Leopardi finished the statue and it was finally erected on a pedestal in the Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, where it stands today.

1 Gameboard, consist of two parts of four 204 x 277 mm folded panels, making a 816 x 552 mm big gameboard. The countries are all mottled brown colored and have light colored borders.

1 Rules Manual (including scenarios), with on the cover the Table of Contents, 20 pags, 275 x 202 mm. On page 20 the year of production: 1995.
