I was thinking today, when I should have been working:

Isn't TS the BEST WARGAME ever!!??

I mean:

1. It's by GMT
2. It's got nice graphics
3. It's about a conflict that I was actually PART of!

It just makes a tingle go down my leg!

But then I was struck with horror: Is TS EVEN a wargame?

1. It wasn't designed by Mark Herman
2. There are no Nazis in it
3. It doesn't have a 135-page rule book.

After all of this thinking, it was time for lunch, so I just said to hell with it.....

And if you think this posting is odd, just keep in mind that Santa Grogs requested it, so I hope his/her little belly shook like jelly and it brought a smile to Santa's face!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not a wargame and the graphics are decidedly mediocre.

I was underwhelmed by the gameplay.

Well done. I am impressed. I'll roll a couple of dice and look up on the Naughtiness Redemption CRT to find out how much you've improved with this effort.

Ho Ho Ho!!!

But they are already captured so there is no fun in it. I also would add confederates in point 2

TS doesn't have any counters that represent forces implied in a conflict, so I think isn't a wargame. It's a great boardgame with Cold War Theme, but isn't a wargame (and you know it!) ; )

I'm waiting for the sequel, Breaking Dawn.

Who'd imagine that grogs on this site would think so highly of a Vampires and Werewolves wargame?

Twilight Struggle is a conflict simulation where neither side could use more than of a fraction of their military might. There was more military spending on the "cold war" than on any other war in history. Actually there was probably more military spending on the cold war than all other wars combined. This was the real big one. The "war" was so big and horrifying that the weapons could not be used. Now that's a war.

That always reminds me of the idea that a perfect hitter in baseball would get no hits. If a batter hit a home run every time he came to bat, he would be intentionally walked all the time. So after a short while he would get no hits, very few RBIs and lots of walks. Would a baseball boardgame about such great hitters still be a "baseball game" since there would be no hitting of the ball, and no fielding to simulate. Twilight Struggle is war game about a war where the weapons are so powerful (and effective at killing and destroying) that they don't get used.

It's only half a joke. At least FFG doesn't rely on Euros to sell games.

A "wargame" is really just a subcategory of thematic games. They are simply thematic games about a more specific theme. It really is as simple as that.

However, there's a whole category of games that are thematic games about war which offer long technical rulebooks, try to be simulations of historical events and have lower than average quality of components (compared to the rest of the industry). These games cater to a very specific niche audience that doesn't really have a name to describe this type of games. Many use the term "wargame" to describe it because it seems to be a common denominator amongst those games.

So whenever a game comes out, that is all about war, but is more mainstream than that niche and has higher quality components, we have endless discussions about whether it's a wargame or not. Some thinks the term should be exclusively used to describe the niche, others apply it to mean what the term means (a wargame is a game about war).

I fall into the second camp. Because when talking to anyone outside the niche or not, they understand me (some that adhere to the first definition will go all hipster and correct me thereafter, but they clearly understood my meaning in the first place, meaning a successful use of the word). If they understood me, then the term and it's context was used correctly as being able to communicate and be understood is the main purpose of a language.

There just needs to be another, less vague, word to describe the niche. None of them catched-on so far. (historical war simulations? too much of a mouthful)

A giant, inclusive definition is a pretty useless definition.

And there is another term: conflict simulation.

So the term "table" is a pointless word because it describes too many types of things?

Gotcha... so TS is a wargame... as is say Catan (hexes, conflict, etc...).

Perhaps you mean "military conflict simulation" which of course still leaves room for TS.
