An alternative set of rules for the two-player game are now posted. I think they're really exiting, but try them out and see what you think.

There might be some interesting surprises in store for you. Or maybe it'll all be shot down in flames. We'll see. :-)

Has anyone tried this in the last month? I'd love to read some commentary before deciding about putting time into coming up to speed on new rules.
I certainly DO applaud DieterS' effort and the goal.

Thank you, Michael. I'd like to get some feedback, too!

Here's a short summary:

Stage I: The West and Axis factions are rivals. The Soviet Union is an Axis protectorate under limited control by the West player.

Stage II: A successful dice roll lets the West player gain full control over the Soviet faction. The Axis needs to win fairly quickly or . . .

Stage III: Optionally, the Axis player can take over the West faction. The Axis faction is abandoned and goes completely on the defensive under very limited control by the newly minted West player. The West races the Soviets to Berlin.

I should also add that a key concept behind this design is that the two opposing players are competing with each other, using the factions under their control only as their weapons.

A byproduct of this arrangement is intended to simulate the historical dynamics and tensions of this period. But I also realize that I'll need to continue testing to make adjustments where necessary for a balanced two-player game.
