I get that the Escorts get a random bonus to detection after June 1942 , but the counters also give them, "... the noted bonus to its Detect die rolls and Attack ratings."

The 2nd Edition doesn't use attack ratings, it uses chit pulls. So, I've interpreted this to mean you pull the designated number of extra 'light hits' when the escort attacks. What do you do?

I use the same logic as with Damage counters. Light Damage counter, for example, that has -1 to Attack, in 2nd Ed. means -1 Light Hit counter. Heavy Damage counter, with -2 to Attack, means -1 Heavy Hit counter.

So +1 to Attack is +1 Light Hit conter, +2 to Attack is +1 Heavy Hit counter etc.

So you add the light hits. Do you think that adding makes the escort too powerful? If an escort with, say, three light hits surface attack, draws a +3 tactics chit, and is at zero range (+1 heavy hit), then you would have an attack of 2 heavy hits and 4 light hits. I guess it's not that much different than if you didn't add them, 1 heavy, 6 light.

I played yesterday and I don't think the u-boat would have survived if I added up the light hits...

Yesterday, the U-boats attacked a large convoy. One, green crew, fired a FAT torpedo from long-range and registered a hit that drew the escorts to the back of the convoy. Then Lehmann-Willenbrock, in U-96, the most experienced kapitanleut, surfaced directly in front of the leading ranks of merchant ships. His men scrambled down to the deck to unlimber the 3.5 inch gun, while Groth, 1-WO, worked on the torpedo firing solutions. Suddenly, a lookout shouted. There was The Arbutus, a Corvette, that had apparently been hidden in among the merchants, coming straight for the U-boat. The escort was a veteran hunter, having drawn a +3 tactics chit. Suddenly detected, the U-boats lookouts watched in horror as the Arbutus called in the rest of the escorts and Willenbrock was faced with the daunting prospect of diving beneath a depth-charge barrage from up to 4 vengeful escorts. His mind raced. He faced corvettes and ASW vessels. Once submerged they could use their superior submerged attack ability against him. Also, he had a crack (+2) crew working the gun. He turned to Groth, "can you target the escorts? And give two to the closest one." Groth's mind reeled, but he nodded and got to work, blotting out his captains shouts to the frightened crew on the deck, "Open fire on the nearest escort! Now!!"
Groth hurriedly fed a stream of numbers, distance, angle, speed, to the lieutenant manning to TDC, wincing at the sudden bark of the cannon. Willenbrock was too experienced to rush him, but his nerves screamed with every passing second as the escorts closed ever nearer. He caught Groth's nod and in the same instant yelled down the conning tower hatch, "All tubes, Los!", and then to the men outside, "Keep at it!!". They looked at him incredulously. They would have to fight it out on the surface.
By the Uzo, Willenbrock tore his eyes off the Arbutus to look at Groth holding aloft the watch that ticked like the hammering heart of every man aboard. The explosions, when they came, were so close together that Willenbrock couldn't be sure of how many hits they had achieved.
But the dice had rolled in their favour. Three escorts had suffered heavy damage, and only one at zero range, the Arbutus, had suffered an extra light hit (the brave gun crew). Most of the escorts could not shoot back now because of their damage, and the sub's high evasion skill, and with heavy damage, lag movement carried them farther away from U-96. Willenbrock thanked the gods he had loaded the two T-5 torpedoes. But U-96 was not clear yet. Arbutus still had the range on her.
The Arbutus, stung but not killed, swung into the attack in the swirling wake of U-96. It was close enough that Groth winced at the crack of the Corvettes guns and he felt the spray as the shot fell close alongside. At zero range the Arbutus had one extra heavy hit to go with the three extra light hits she had from tactics on top of her normal sting. Even damaged, she could deliver a heavy hit, and two light hits. But the smoke from the damage blinded the crew and the heavy attack produced no results at all. The light attacks produced some flooding and stressed the crew, but the damage U-96 had inflicted on the escorts was enough for U-96 to outrun them on the surface, and the escorts, had to lick their wounds and wait for another day.
