Re: [WIP] Inca the Thinker: A Mischievous Cat - 2016 Children's Game PnP Contest - Ideas Phase
I've not quite had the time to get the art/graphic design quite to the standard I wanted but the mechanics seem to work alright.

Here's some pictures of the components

Re: [WIP] Inca the Tinker: A Mischievous Cat - 2016 Children's Game PnP Contest - Ideas Phase
And here's a WIP rhyme to go with the game! It will be regularly updated until I am happy with it

Quote:

Inca the Tinker

Inca the Tinker was a beautiful cat,
Elegantly tall and the inkiest black.

He was loving, adorable and wonderfully sweet,
But hidden beneath he’d a mischievous streak.

His ravenous hunger, each night he’d sneak,
Into the cupboards, open each door with a creak.

What luck he had. What had he found?
His favourite! Broccoli! Quickly gulped down.

His belly satisfied and feeling quite full,
He'd search the porch and shred the green shawl.

Now looking around, he’d want something to hunt.
A coat? A hat? The umbrellas out front?

No matter the thing he just want it all.
If he couldn't reach he’d yowl and he’d call.

Up got his mistress in the middle of the night,
Petting poor Inca. Had he had a big fright?

Little she knew what mischievous things,
Had naughty Inca done to her things

He'd search all the shelves until he had found,
His favourite treat then upstairs he'd bound.

He'd gleefully hook elastic bands from the drawer,
And flick them and chew them til they were no more.

Next came the lego that he'd chase over the floor.
Then he'd sit there and meow wanting more ... More!

But what more is there, one might sit and might think.
But Inca the Tinker would give a knowing look. And a sneaky wink.

Teddy bear brown was the next port of call,
Up came his paw and down it would fall.

The baby awake and crying out loud,
The mistress up again, no sleep she allowed.

Teddy bear found and placed back in cot,
The mistress could sleep and so could the tot.

Tired and shattered from all that he'd done,
He'd look out the window and see the rise of the Sun

At last he was tired and curled up to sleep,
At the bottom of the bed by his mistress's feet.

Thank-you C.L for your suggestions!!

Re: [WIP] Inca the Tinker: Tales of a Mischievous Cat - 2016 Children's Game PnP Contest - Ideas Phase
This sounds (and looks) awesome. Inca must be quite a handful! He reminds me of Slinky Malinki http://www.hairymaclary.com/characters/slinky-malinki/ from the Hairy Maclary series by Lynley Dodd. Well worth checking out if you don't know them.

Looking forward to testing the game!

Re: [WIP] Inca the Tinker: Tales of a Mischievous Cat - 2016 Children's Game PnP Contest - Ideas Phase
Slinki and Inca (and my childhood black cat Elsa) are the inspiration! Although Inca prefers to curl up on top of me but that didn't rhyme!

I've tried to make it different which is why it's a work in progress. Having read the book so many times I think perhaps a bit too much has slipped into my rhyme and I did dream it up whilst half dozing at 6am this morning after my daughter (and Inca) woke me!

Anyway I will continue to iterate it to ensure it's sufficiently different to Slinky! Maybe I need to somehow include Inca's love for broccoli and elastic band! Let me know when you think I've got there

So fun! See if you can build a nice consistent rhythm in, as well as the rhyme, and kids will love it! Try reading out loud.

I've been doing that all day! Can't get the dammed thing out of my head! Like now I should be asleep in my bed!

I can't wait to see how you rhyme "broccoli"...

Cat +broccoli = ew, really?

It's one of his favourite things that gets dropped on the floor by our 15m old. Sticky porridge with oat milk is a close second!

I worry now that the game won't live up to they rhyme!

Will give it another go today then put up some rudimentary files and rules.

So what do you think? is the broccoli a suitable rhyme?

Any thank-you to C.L. for her great suggested changes

Ok. You asked for it. Ahem (clears throat)...

A puss with a penchant for pilfering broccoli?
Such an astonishing psychopathology!

(Awkward silence, uncomfortable fidgeting, the audience wishes they were elsewhere...)

And that, dear friends, is why you should never invite me to contribute to your poetry.

Re: [WIP] Inca the Tinker: Tales of a Mischievous Cat - 2016 Children's Game PnP Contest - Ideas Phase

How about leaving out some joining words to make the rhythm stronger, and maybe adding some alliteration? I also like unusual words and rhymes on really long words, but that's probably a personal thing so you may not like the second bit...

Inca the Tinker, a beautiful cat,
Elegant, tall and the inkiest black,
Loving, adorable, wonderfully sweet,
But hidden beneath it: a mischievous streak.

For though in the day he was feline perfection
Late, after sundown, his pet predilection
For prowling and pilfering, pouncing and play
Would see him set out seeking some sort of prey...

...124 to run fleeing from the mountain. ...125 to use a rope to climb the cliff. ...126 to quickly cast "summon stairs." ...127 to dodge under the falling rocks.

I actually like the poem as written by Janice.

Quote:
He was loving, adorable and wonderfully sweet,
But hidden beneath he’d a mischievous streak.

works better for me than:

Quote:
Loving, adorable, wonderfully sweet,
But hidden beneath it: a mischievous streak.

Realised I forgot to add a clarification to the rules.

You can only block someones Adventure cards if they have at least 2 still facedown in front of them.

Is there a file for adventure cards?
Also I don't see tile backs only tile fronts in the file.

Perhaps the full color files have fronts and backs. I didn't look. The low-ink version does not have backs. I'm fairly certain.

Just print the file twice and discard the cat treats for the adventure cards.

I'll sorry out the backs this evening.

Sorry

The full colour were missing backs, low ink were present although they were the last 2 pages.

I've now re-uploaded both files with backs alternated between the fronts.

I've unfortunately been suffering a lot of winter illness and didn't get a chance to do different cards. Game play should work with careful storage.

Fixing this is on my to do list over the Xmas break, albeit too late for this contest. Sorry

Thank-you to everyone who took part and voted (whether that be for Inca the Tinker or not!). It's been a fun first contest.

The results were:

2nd Place: Very Young Children
3rd Place: Pre-School Kindergarten Children
3rd Place: Pattern/Matching Game
3rd Place: Solo/Coop Game

My to do list remains:

1. Create seperate cards
2. Get better art!
3. Playtest it some more

And not necessarily in that order!

Hat's off for your design initiative. Keep at it, Cats is a monster commercial theme - and as an old chalkie, games that involve reading and logic choices are very well received by the education community.
