He loves and plays Yu-Gi-Oh! and that is it.
I have been tasked with finding him a game that
ISN'T Yu-Gi-Oh! but one he will hopefully understand
and like. He is out of town, so I will have to mail
it to him and hope the rules suffice.

My first instincts were Machi Koro and/or Quarriors?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

My eight year old nephew really enjoys Machi Koro (with the Harbor expansion). He also enjoys Boss Monster, Rampage (Terror in Meeple City), King of Tokyo, and Mice and Mystics.

One of these themes might appeal to him:

King of Tokyo
Love Letter: Batman
Star Realms
Smash Up
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

I got my son into board games with Rivet Wars: Eastern Front and Arcadia Quest. The minis are a hook for kids, but each of those games also has engaging gameplay.

Every kid (from 8-14) who comes over my house asks for King of Tokyo and many of them have asked for it for Christmas.

I see where King of Tokyo is not recommeded for two?

He has to go to "events" to play Yu-Gi-Oh! or at school
so a game he can get his friends or sister to play with
him would be a plus, but I don't think I would want to
get him one that isn't good with 2.

Thank you all again. I appreciate all the suggestions
and welcome more.

Star Realms or Ascension are card driven games that play well with two, and would be linked to Yu Gi Oh because of the cards, combos, etc.

Karuba is good with 2 and has great appeal for that age group.
