I'll recommend one current kickstarter, Feudum, and one kickstarting tomorrow, Lisboa.

Of the games I currently own, my nominations are Scythe, and Village.

+1 for Islebound, which a previous poster mentioned. It's also a Laukat design.

Omen: Edge of the Aegean is on KS right now. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous, possibly better than the original Omen. It is a stand-alone game in 28 cards, but can be used as an expansion to the original game. I can't recommend this highly enough, the game is amazing.

If it's just you and your girlfriend playing, perhaps 7 Wonders: Duel instead of the regular 7 Wonders? It's a 2-player version.

+1 Takenoko
The Bloody Inn
Morels

Morels is a card game about collecting sets of mushrooms that's quite a bit simpler and friendlier than Ashes, perhaps a good intro game? It's often recommended for couples. For a card game that's a bit more complex, but not as much as Ashes, The Bloody Inn has really unique, "artistic" artwork, with a quirky macabre theme.

I asked the same question in a thread a couple months ago, and made a slideshow with the suggestions, so you may want to have a look.

Thanks, I enjoyed the slideshow... There are some game art in your slides that I don't think is that great or all that interesting, but as they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I personally tend to like game art that really pops out at you, or had bright colors.

Surprisingly, you left out some of the oft-mentioned games in these types of threads, like Abyss, Dixit and Mysterium.

Tokaido looks great to me, and is very straightforward and welcoming to non-gamers. But it's very cartoon-y, don't know if that's what you were going for.

If you want a serious and realistic style with lots of light/illumination like Ashes, and want a simple game too, I'd say Lost Legacy (that's one, there are more here, here, here and here).

Without actual mechanical, size, theme, etc. concerns about the game, I just recommended ones I like and that look good.
