My wife asked me to find a pirate themed game. I know I've seen a few here and there while browsing, but can't for the life of me remember any of them. I'm looking for something not too heavy, ideally something that can be played with our child, however she's well versed in gaming so as long as it isn't overly complex she'll get it. Any suggestions?

Depends on the age of your child, but Libertalia is a great pirate game, recommended for age 14+.

Jamaica is a fun pirate themed race game. It is at is best with 4 or more players. It is not complex, I can imagine it plays well with children too.

For 2, Jolly & Roger seems like a lot of fun, also not complex at all. I have bought it, after seeing it being played at Essen last month, but haven't yet played it myself.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is a good co-op where every player is a different pirate character.

Black Fleet.

Super-good production value.
Simple gameplay, yet fun.
Can be played by any kids as soon as they know how to read a few cards.

Definitely Black Fleet or Jamaica to play with a kid. They're great games too. For silly, quick fun you could look at Get Bit and Walk The Plank too.

I too think Black Fleet or Jamaica are two great options in general, and for kids. Both are lighthearted and somewhat fast game play.

Other's that might work are:
Port Royal - Light push your luck card game. Can be made cooperative with expansion Port Royal: Ein Auftrag geht noch... Also a standalone more streamlined version of this game just came out: Port Royal Unterwegs! (it can also expand the original)

Scuttle! - Filler card game. Age shows 6+ so good for kids, but a fun game for anyone really. Great artwork too.

Merchants & Marauders - is likely too long/heavy of a game based on what you're looking for, but I felt it should be mentioned since it's one of the greats in the genre.

I'm glad it was said. Yes, probably heavier than what he's wanting, but a darn good game.

It can get frustrating if you lose a couple of battles early in the game, and it maybe more random than many others like, but Pirate's Cove isn't a bad choice either.

If you're content with pirates as a painted on theme there are dozens available, but if you want a game that lets you step into the age of pirates as depicted in books and films, designed from the ground up so that all the elements come together properly, you'll want Merchants & Marauders or Blackbeard (the original, not the second edition). Before the kids are old enough for the real thing, Trade Winds and Jamaica are the ones I favor.

Merchants and Marauders seconded. What complexity there is, is often just automation (NPC ships) that will be there even with a group of adults, and you just designate a reliable player to handle it the whole time.

Re: Pirate theme
Hi Bryan,

My kids are 6 and 3 and found a great fun older game called Black Cannon.

If yours are older than +1 for Merchants & Marauders

All the best!

That's the wrong Blackbeard. Look for the AH version on eBay or wherever. arrrh

Another +1 for Black Fleet. It's a great family game with great components, and serious gamers in our group find it a fun break from the heavier games.

Jamaica, as mentionned is a great option.
For a kid, look at Sewer Pirats, fun little game with cool looking miniatures. Rahdo did a runthrough and it made his Top 10 pirate games.
