Still haven't received my preorder yet. I've been patiently waiting on funagain. In the meantime, I've been thinking of expansions already. What are some things you all would love to see? I'm thinking cobbles! Not sure how you would implement them, maybe a -2 affect on every card and only one lane? What is everyone's thoughts? Also, team time trial possibly? This could be done by only being able to draft off of your own team mate? Any other ideas out there?

Yes! Now I just need my game to be on it's way. Do you know how the cobbles work?

Cobblestones were first tested almost 2 years ago. I can't guarantee it will stay the same, or ever get released (publisher needs to sell all available copies and more first). I've tried to keep rules to a minimum, using the physical layout/graphics to communicate it instead.

Cobblestones are sections of ~8 to 12 long, one lane wide, and with side winds (no slipstreaming).

Team trial has already been designed as a promo card, that I hope we'll be able to put out there. 2/3 of a stage with 2/3 of the cards, no blocking and only slipstreaming to your teammate.

Happy racing

PS Rene stays in the know because he ready everything here AND follows the FB page https://m.facebook.com/FlammeRougeBG/

As some of you have already noticed Time trial promo is already available in the Man vs Meeple KS campaign as a perk - so eventually it'll come out as official Promo item.

Hard racing!

For extra realism, how about doping cards? They cause inexplicable improvements to your performance, but you're disqualified if caught using them.

Run out of cards before the end? You punctured.

Since I stop the race as soon as the first rider cross the finish line, it has never happened to me, nor to my dummy opponents.

Here's what I'm planning to try :
When the space you must move to is fully occupied, you choose between :
- you move one less space (normal rule)
- you don't move because of puncture. Your card is not discarded but returns onto the top of your deck (you'll have it for the next turn), you can't slipstream (and no rider can thanks to you), you can't get an exhaustion card since you don't move.

Edit

Forget it. After a few races, I think it's not a good idea. It's almost always better to move than to stay on site.

Edit 2

I'll try this :
When the space a rider must move to is fully occupied,
1- he moves one less space (normal rule)
2- he slipstreams (eventually)
3- he punctures : on the next turn, this rider will play his card after all other riders will have played theirs.

What about something with crashes? It is something very real in cycling races. I guess the challenge would be not to make this unbalanced or too luck based.

I like the idea of chances of punctured tires. It would be quite thematic to link that to the cobblestones.

Or weather? Maybe combined with chance of crashing when wet or dehydration when really hot.

The problem is making crashes/punctures dependent on player decisions rather than completely random.

In Leader 1, you can choose to take a chance rolling for a crash by taking the most direct route through certain black spaces on cobblestone and downhills. It's hard to do this with the FR system because lane changes are meaningless, there's no way to make for example an inside corner more risky.

For FR, you could do something like rolling for crashes if you are surrounded (all 3 sides are occupied by cyclists), simulating being in the middle of peloton. Or have this only apply on cobblestone (although the new cobblestone may only be 1 lane). But I always feel like I'm in an 8-cyclist breakaway group when I play FR, so simulating peloton crashes doesn't seem to fit FR.

In Leader 1, you also can choose to take a chance rolling for a crack when you try to go fast on mountain spaces. This would be an interesting aspect to incorporate into FR. For example, you could differentiate ascents, not be restricting how far you can go (you can still move up to 5), but you roll for cracks depending on the category: e.g. roll if you move 5 on a Cat2/3, roll once if you move 4/twice if you move 5 on a Cat1/HC. And cyclists could vary in their crack risk to simulate different climbing skill. But instead of losing a turn like in Leader 1, instead you take an exhaustion and/or don't move as far.

I don't think it's worthwhile to try to simulate punctures in the game. It not that interesting game-play wise, unless you go the direction of Tour Cycle Free and have 6+ cyclist teams with domestiques and support cars that have to help your cyclist repair his bike and get paced back to the peloton. And good etiquette says the other cyclists would need to slow down for a mechanical.

I was indeed thinking about sprints with multiple riders. We had such a thing yesterday where 5 riders were on three spaces right in front of the finish line. We all felt like that moment could have used that thematic boost of the danger of a crash. Not a big chance of it happening, but a chance nonetheless.
