My 18 year old son, asked me to recommend a game that he could play with a distant friend online, on vassal or something similar. He's looking for a board game rather than a computer game (they do that already, plenty). I have a few thoughts based on his requirements, but would appreciate your suggestions as well. Note in particular his last request (which cracked me up):

Quote:
We would like to play a game that is:
1v1
Turn-Based
Strategy
Playable Online

We would like it to include any or all of these elements:
War/Combat
Economy
Cards
Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Fun
Deck Building

We DO NOT want to play a game with these elements:
World War 1 or 2 simulation
Extremely Long play time
Extremely short play time
Annoying History references

What do you recommend?

But seriously, some VASSAL possibilities:

Space Empires: 4X (sci-fi, strategy, economy, combat, minor card usage with expansion, but: no deckbuilding, requires bookkeeping)
BattleLore (Second Edition) (Command & Colors system so lots of cards, combat, fantasy, but: tactical, not proper deckbuilding, no economy)

If they both are willing to spend some money I recommend getting the Steam Version. Pretty great if you transition from video- to boardgames.

Not a wargame, obviously. It appears your son is looking for a weuro. Perhaps Scythe would be a good fit; it lines up well with the wants and avoids the don't wants.

So Scythe is a really interesting suggestion, because it does have the build-your-engine aspect to it. I wonder how that plays 2-player, I've only tried it with four.

I was also thinking about Hands in the Sea, which has an excellent Vassal implementation. And it has economy, deck-building and battles (sort of). It does go a bit heavy on the "annoying history references," but as his dad, I think that's good for him. Anyway, to somebody who thought "google" was a verb growing up, temperamental elephants of war, huge spikey-gangplanks called Ravens on rowed ships, and sacred chickens that refuse to eat on the day of battle might as well be fantasy. Right?

Space Empires 4x is also a great suggestion, although I think the bookkeeping might not work for them - which is too bad. Battlelore would probably be of interest as well, he and I have played tons of CC:Ancients - although he always preferred making his own armies rather than playing historical battles.

P.S.
I love "weuro" - hadn't hear that.

A Few Acres of Snow is available only at http://yucata.de/. It's got War, Economy, Cards, and Deck Building from your list.

These are not online: Mythotopia which is a multiplayer fantasy implementation of a "Few Acres". There's also Hands in the Sea which adapts the "Few Acres" system to the First Punic War.

Too bad there isn't a Star Wars Rebellion vassal mod yet. Other possibles are War of the Ring or its spin offs. They might also enjoy something along the lines of Mage Knight, Mage Wars, or Summoner Wars.

I also recommend the Steam version of Twilight Struggle.

Also, If both players have a copy of Dominion that is easy to play together over skype.

We have played Smallworld over Skype, but we have an additional camera over my setup of the board, to ensure that the state was kept consistent.

If you want to use Vassal, and they like Star Wars, you can suggest X-Wing Miniatures.

ZunTzu anyone?

http://zuntzu.com/

'Twilight Struggle' is still hosted here, but other links are dead.

I would recommend Limey-Yank Games website for a good selection of ZunTzu/Vassal/Cyberboard game boxes/modules.

http://www.limeyyankgames.co.uk/

Good thing about any of these BGE's (Board-Game Emulators), is the kid's may want to learn a little coding to produce their own modules!

Regards, Rich

The new digital play of 1775: Rebellion comes to mind.

Avaiable on PC- Steam and iPad.

A good game with a touch of light wargaming.
