I recently picked up Evolution Climate and have been really enjoying it. I've heard that you are not supposed to mix it with Flight, and also that an upgrade it is out there to turn regular evolution into Evolution Climate. I'm wondering if the opposite is possible. Can I downgrade (take cards out of) my set of Evolution Climate into the base game of Evolution? If I could do that then I could downgrade and add the flight cards in order to play the expansion without having to buy the base game. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Yes - You can get the rules from the evolution 2nd edition page, then you just need to take out some of the cards and ignore the icons about temperature change.

It's absolutely possible.

Remove the following traits from your deck that are specific to Climate:
Cooling Frills
Heavy Fur
Hibernation
Migratory
Mud Wallowing
Nocturnal

Remove the 6 Carnivore cards that have a volcano in the background.

Your deck should be basically the same as the base game. There is some text on some of the cards that refer to Climate effects as well as suns and snowflakes on some for Climate that you should ignore.

When you add the Flight cards in, make sure you notice the slight differences in the Carnivore cards that get added in so that you can remove them to swap back to Climate.

If you take out those 7 sets of cards isn't that going to alter the length of the game? Or are those just extra and not in the original?

Everything else in the deck is from the base game of Evolution. The Climate version adds all of those extra cards, but instructs you to shorten the deck based on the number of players to preserve game length.

Some people have been playing flight with climate when they have 7 people.

Also you can play with flight with climate. Just use the cliff, flight bases, and the flight trait. Leave out all other flight cards.

Hi there,
this is exactly the topic that I addressed in my forum post, two below this one "Switching Climate to Flight"

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1671843/switching-climate-f...

Check out that link for more info, but I've learnt:
Dom doesn't like it being called "downgrading"
You don't just remove 48 cards, there are some changed rules in Evolution base eg deck setup per players
They've just recommended a version of Climate+Flight where you don't need to remove cards (no flight traits)

Climate has 48 (not 49) cards more than the original. Unlike Evolution Base, Climate has you adjust the deck size for every number of players. (In Evolution Base, only change the size of the deck, if you're playing with 2 players)

By removing 40 cards exactly.

BTW, I have seen this question many times and even answered one of the threads. However, I just realized, is there specific food count Carnivores you take should take out? I could go through the trouble of answering that myself by comparing the base game deck to the climate deck and report back. Just curious if anyone knows off hand.

I think you remove the Carnivore cards that have the volcano in the background.

The Carnivores in Flight have a different picture than the Carnivores in Evolution.

The Carnivores in CLIMATE have two different pictures to enable people to more "easily" transform CLIMATE into Evolution if they choose to do so.
