My mother has tasked me with finding a game for Christmas for my cousins/aunt/uncle. There are 3 kids - 12, 14, and 16, and they are all very smart kids with top marks. They do like science, reading, and general academics and are all very high achievers. Oldest is a girl, younger two are boys. As a family they get along fairly well, though the youngest often acts more like 10, and I can definitely see him being a sore loser.

This is the gift for the whole family so I can see a $50ish budget being fine, but lower would also be good.

What would you recommend? Most of the games I play and enjoy don't handle 5 players well, so I've been racking my brain, and thought I'd ask outwards. I've thought of obvious options like Codenames but I'm wondering if there are any more options that come to mind.

Of note: they live in the US despite me being Canadian, so we would be dealing with American prices, not Canadian

If they have a little experience in board games: Power Grid. But if they don't then you would probably go with one of the introduction games: Ticket to Ride: Europe or Catan or King of Tokyo (but don't forget the expansions!)

I have not played 7 Wonders, but it goes (appropriately) up to 7 players, seems elegant/intelligent and holds a high ranking here on the geek.

I enjoy Roll for the Galaxy which goes up to five. There's a nice bit of brain burning that goes on with this one, and it's fun to play because of the dice, but also lots of strategy.

Edit: for lighter fare I suggest Carcassonne.

I agree, or how about Mysterium for something even more unusual and thematic? And as it's a co-op, no need to worry about sore losers.

ETA - Just realized Kevin suggested it already.

Guess I'm a little late to the party here, but if you're ever shopping for them again and the youngest turns out to be a sore loser, I was going to suggest a co-op. Both Forbidden Desert and Pandemic: The Cure accommodate 5.
