19 December (Turn 4)
Normal, Poor, 1 hex
Allied Air Points: 0
German replacements are 4AV, 2 Tigers and 8 non-AV.
Allied replacements are 4AV and 6 non-AV.

The German wins the first player roll, and chooses to activate first. The Germans have lost their +1 date modifier for SNAFU rolls now, but the Allies are still getting their -1.

I don’t get AP much when activating the individual formations, but actually choosing the formation to activate is a different matter. The Germans have several pressing needs. 9th SS needs to activate before it can be bottled up by the Elsenborn ridge defenders, 1st SS needs to get to Spa before 30th Infantry, and 2nd Panzer needs to take Houffalize before that city can be garrisoned. Which gets priority? There isn’t much that the allies can get to Houffalize with any certainty. If I can dislocate the 2nd and 99th by attacks from the rear then Spa will be the least of the northern shoulder’s worries, so I decide to go forward with…

9th SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Fail
Aargh! I’ve got to pray for a 2nd activation, and just manage it with a 4.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The II/9 Panzers drop support and kill a step of the battalion of the 99th blocking the road south. Two motorised battalions aided by a suppression barrage roll a good result, and send the 3/295 scurrying back to Elsenborn with another step loss (to 2). 1/9 drops support on the battalion of the 99th and moves adjacent to Camp D’Elsenborn. It can’t move into the VP hex as there is no OBJ marker, but by stopping supply it allows the recon battalion to move south past the US infantry and place an OBJ on Elsenborn before killing another step of the 3/295 (to 1) with an attack by fire. The Pioneer battalion joins the recon unit in an attack on Elsenborn and sends the US battalion to the graveyard at the cost of a recon step, and a traffic marker in the captured village.

II/19 is now able to capture Camp D’Elsenborn and cut the MSRs to the 2nd and 99th IDs. The 9th SS did the best it could with a single limited activation, but a full or 2 partials would have been devastating. Fatigue remains at 1.

7th Armored Division
Yesterday they were ordered south to attack the northern flank of 2nd Panzer and Panzer Lehr, Today they receive instructions to move west to defend the river crossing at Houffalize and block support reaching 116th Panzer. General Hasbrouck shrugs. Someone above him must know what’s going on.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The Division reaches the hamlet of Cherain, some 10km by road from Houffalize. A 2nd activation is rolled.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Fail

1st SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
An attack on Francorchamps fails to budge the defending Belgian fusileers. An attack on Stavelot destroys the defending engineers, but the paratroops of the 82nd hold fast, inflicting 2 step losses on the I/2 motorised infantry. The unit remains Fresh but there is no 2nd activation.

CCB/10th Armored
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Fail
The failure is taken to allow the chance of a 2nd activation, which succeeds.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail
But nothing is gained. There was a longshot possibility of getting units to Houffalize, but apparently the orders never arrived.

Lehr Panzer Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Pass
Panzer Lehr drives on Houffalize, capturing the city and the bridge with the aid of the last Grief team. This reopens the MSR for 116th Panzer as long as the garrison of Bastogne can be penned in. Units of the Division pass through Houffalize and turn east, engaging and driving back the spearhead tanks of 7th AD. The formation remains Fresh but there is no 2nd activation.

112th/28 Regiment
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Fail
No 2nd activation is gained.

2nd Panzer Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Recovery
Fatigue is reduced to 1 and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The 110/28 Regiment is removed when I/304 sends the last unit of the formation to the graveyard. Delayed by the need to secure its rear, the Division is only able to push lead units a few km north of Houffalize, while screening Bastogne until reinforcements arrive. Fatigue increases back to 2.

1st Infantry Division
The Division will attempt to reopen contact with the 2nd and 99th IDs.
Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
Two battalions drive the SS from Camp D’Elsenborn with losses, and retake the village. The defender of Waimes surrenders due to isolation. Fatigue increases to 4, so there is no longer a roll for 2nd activation.

12th SS Panzer Division

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
5,6/I drops support on the units with both US HQs on Elsenborn Ridge. An attack lead by panzer grenadiers against 2nd ID HQ just trades step losses. Battalions press around the front line to take Butgenbach and cut supply links once again. The formation loses Fresh status but gets a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The Division squeezes the noose tighter around the two trapped divisions, slicing them into disconnected sections. Attacks by fire and barrages kill half a dozen steps across the front lines. Fatigue remains at zero.

3rd Armored Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail
Sigh. The intent was to move the reinforcing Division south to attack the spearhead of 116th Panzer at Hotton, but I guess the commander is querying his orders. Do I take a flip to lower fatigue to zero, or go for a 50% chance of a 2nd activation? Well a single full activation is still going to leave the formation a few km short of Hotton, so I’ll take the recovery and hope for more aggression tomorrow.

The Germans need 26VG against Bastogne ASAP to let the panzers continue westward, but the threat of the 10th Armored needs to be addressed first. Fuhrer Begleit and Fuhrer Grenadier Brigades are tasked with counter-attacking south down Skyline Drive to drive back the US tanks.

Fuhrer Begleit Brigade
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
The Brigade motors to the Dasburg bridge, pausing to allow the bicycle troops to keep up and for the Train to flip out of Ghost mode. Unfortunately for 26VG the Brigade does not get a 2nd activation.

CCA/9th Armored

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
With the aid of the armoured battalion, the Command’s mechanised infantry are able to break out of their pocket and drive off II/988. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.

277th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The Division takes responsibility for the front line from Krinkelt northward, hoping for a mass surrender of the 2nd and 99th infantry now cut off from their HQs. There is no 2nd activation.

106th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Setup Prep Def
Activation: Partial
The formation sets up defences to hold St Vith. A barrage kills 1 step of II/294. The last battalions from the Schnee Eifel surrender due to isolation.

18th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
The formation edges forward toward St Vith, chipping away at the defenders with attacks by fire and barrages. The last step of the 3/424 is eliminated. Fatigue remains at zero and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
A well coordinated series of attacks drive off the perimeter defenders and allows an attack on St Vith itself, where a 3pt barrage and a good attack roll destroys both defending battalions (including the mech infantry of CCB/9) and takes the town. Fatigue increases to 1.

82nd Airborne Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The formation is in trouble, as the HQ was forced back and the bulk of the Division is now out of command radius. Either Vielsalm or Stavelot is going to have to be abandoned. 7th Armored is now blocking access to Vielsalm, so the 82nd concentrates attention north against Peiper. The 2/504 bounces off Peiper’s flak detachment, but 2 battalions attacking the HQ itself are successful in forcing Peiper eastwards. The attached 740th tank battalion trades step losses with Spitze. The Division remains Fresh and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The 740th trades steps with Spitze again, sending the recon unit to the graveyard. They are less successful against the panzers of 6,7/1, losing a step for no gain. The flak detachment is overrun and destroyed by 2/504, and a barrage kills a step of 11,13/2. The noose is tightened, and the HQ is able to send 2 battalions back south in order to protect the road from Werboment to Salmchateau. This is the only route supporting the MSR of 7th Armored and the 4 formations in the vicinity of St Vith since the fall of Houffalize. Fresh status is retained.

116th Panzer Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
II/16 moves up to Hotton and destroys the garrison with accurate tank shelling. The Division crosses the river and advances on Marche-en-Famenne, but progress is slowed by the need to shift the axis of advance north from the destroyed bridge at La-Roche-en-Ardenne. One battalion goes north and crosses the Ourthe at Bemal, confirming the alternative route is passable. Fatigue increases to 2 and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The march west is totally unopposed, and the trucks drive through March-en-Famenne, Ciney and reach the outskirts of Dinant and the bridge over the Meuse (and at this point I realise why some have advocated saving a couple of Grief teams for the Meuse crossing - ah well, without the previous captured bridges I would not have got this far anyway).

84th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
The 334th Regiment of the Division enters the map north of Huy and is directed to Namur and Andenne amid wild rumours of German tanks on the Meuse. A 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
The march continues.

150th Panzer Brigade
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The Brigade is ordered to clear the cut off battalion of the 1st ID from the Malmedy road and restore the supply line of 1st SS Panzer. Concentrated tank fire and a follow-up attack only succeed in exchanging 1 step losses. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.

10th Armored Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
In a lacklustre performance, 10th Armored’s only success is to drive back KG Kunkel with a 1 step loss, and kill a step of I/39 with a barrage. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

326th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Fail
A flip is taken to reduce fatigue to 2.

30th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Set Up Prep Def
Activation: Partial
A battalion is rushed to the defence of Francorchamps, and the rest of the Division fans out in support. Spa is garrisoned. 1st SS are barraged to no effect. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

KG Peiper

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Partial
The 82nd cannot easily hold Peiper’s units as they have no real AV ZOCs, and the armour begins to squeeze out of the trap. Two steps are lost from being out of CR. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The 3/508 battalion is finally eliminated by heavy tank fire, and the battered KG is back east of the Salm. Surprisingly, the Tigers are the strongest unit remaining, with a full 4 steps. Fatigue remains at 1.

4th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
TF Luckett drops back into Walbillig to try and cover the MSR now that CCA/9 has relocated. Another battalion is rushed to Mullerthal to plug the hole. Barrages along the Berdorf sector are ineffective. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.

62nd Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The battalion of the 106th in the woods south of St Vith is sent fleeing with 2 step losses, allowing the Pioneers to advance and surround the tanks of CCB/9. TF Rose in Burg Reuland is also encircled. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

CCB/3rd Armored Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The Command is sent to support Elsenborn Ridge. TF Jordan leads the way, driving back 12SS’ Recon battalion with a 1 step loss, and trading step losses with 1/9 panzer of the 9SS. An attack drives the SS back north, and gets TF Jordan to camp Elsenborn, but traffic will prevent a further advance. TF Love engages the SS I/26, but gets a rude surprise as it finds the infantry are supported by JagdPanzers, and it loses a step. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

3rd Fallshirmjager Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Fail
The unit flips to lower fatigue to 1.

9th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The formation restricts itself to re-arranging the defensive position and carrying out a couple of barrages to no effect. Fatigue remains at 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

12th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
12 VG moves tidily north of the main road through Bullingen to clear the route and avoid coordination problems. A barrage kills 1 step of the 3/23. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

109th/28 Regiment
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Fail
There is no 2nd activation.

3rd Panzergrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The Division reaches Bullingen with its recon battalion, and the main body are 8-10 road km behind. A 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
Progress is slowed as the Division begins to outrun its supply and travel on road already clogged with the Trains of other units. Vielsalm is given as the destination. The head of the formation pauses outside Ambleve to allow a chance for 3 Trains to clear its path.

CCR/9th Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The Command abandons the infantry trapped in Burg Reuland, who lose all 4 steps in an attempt to breakout and the following isolation. The HQ and last remaining step of TF Harper slip away west on the Vielsalm road, hoping to escape before the supply lines are cut. Fatigue remains at 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

2nd SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Pass
The Division would have liked to divert further south, but ‘Rigid Germans’ keeps them on or north of Rollbahn ‘E’, The lead units pass through Recht on a collision course with the 82nd Airborne. A 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail

CCB/9th Armored Division
Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Fail
The 14th Tank Battalion south of St Vith loses a step to isolation - hang on. I’ve checked safe path rules again and for TAC units only a real AV ZoC can block it, so the unit is OK. I think I’ll take a flip and lower fatigue to 2.

212th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The defensive line is shifted and a barrage is ineffective. Fatigue increase to 3, but a 2nd activation is gained and used for recovery.

101st Airborne Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
I push units out to the NE to put ZOCs on the road that supplies Houffalize. The Germans will have to push these paras back to get their spearhead in supply. A barrage kills a step from KG Gutman. The Division remains Fresh and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
This time the barrage is ineffective, and Fresh status is lost,

352nd Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Pass
The Division moves closely up to Diekirch. One battalion force marches on to the Skyline Drive to cut supply to 10th Armored. Barrages have no effect, and Fatigue remains at 2. There is no 2nd activation.

2nd Infantry Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Partial
With a Fail it would have been automatic to just retreat the Division west, but a Partial gives more options. I think it might be possible to re-open the MSR. Two battalions force KG Recke out of Elsenborn, and the Division’s reconstituted Cavalry place a recon OBJ on 3927 before moving to attack the Pioneers who are placing their ZOC on the trail. The Pioneers are driven back, but the last step of the Cavalry is lost. Artillery kills a step of III/26. The supply line is restored. Five steps are lost due to isolation. Fatigue remains at zero and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
In a fanatical attack (roll of 12) by 1/38 battalion, the III/26 is wiped out in the marsh NW of Krinkelt. Two steps are lost to the attack and 2 more in the retreat. This great result allows the rest of the Division to filter out of the woods and break isolation. A thin defensive screen now faces the SS to north and south. Fatigue increases to 1.

560th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The Division twice overruns the HQ of 112/28, sending it north to the protection of TF Rhea. The 2 battalions of the US Regiment are surrounded. Barrages are ineffective. Fatigue increase to 1 and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The formation is tidied up. An attack on the trapped 2nd battalion only succeeds in trading step losses. Fatigue remains at 1.

99th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The HQ voluntarily retreats to Elsenborn, dropping the Prep Def. The rest of the Division contracts back on that position. A barrage kills a step of I/991. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation. [On later reflection the retreat of the HQ was against the Rigid Fifth Corps rule, which says that Prep Def must be established whenever possible - too late to rewind when I realise this].

26th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 4
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Recovery
There is no 2nd activation.

276th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The Division pulls back a little and kills 2 steps of CCA/9 with barrages. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

Fuhrer Grenadier Battalion
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Partial
The Brigade slowly advances through Bitburg heading towards Vianden. There is no 2nd activation.

5th Fallshirmjager Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The paras deploy and probe north to push up against the Bastogne perimeter. The flak guns knock out a step of the 101st’s supporting Tank Destroyers (to 2), and then kill a step of the 1/401. A barrage kills a second step (to 3). Fatigue increases to 1 and there is no 2nd activation.
