Has anyone come up with a good way to play this game with only two players? I saw there was a thread in the first edition version of the game, but couldn't find anything for the 2nd edition (or Big Box version, which is what I have).

My initial thought would be to have each player control two factions, but I could imagine that getting overly convoluted. The other way would be to chop off full sections of the map, but I haven't played this enough to know if that would mess up gameplay.

Thanks in advance!

I played twice 1v1, with the 3 players variant minus one region. I prefer play other games 1v1 (1775 Rebellion or Sekigahara), but works well for me.

One important note is that the duration of this game is virtually the same (1,5 to 2 hours) with any number of players (2 players included).

We played tonight 2 players were I modified the rules in these 3 ways:

- we took 3 additional countries out of play (on top of the ones taken out for a 3 player game),
- we distributed another country to each of us and added a 3 cube unit for another deployment; and
- we started with 21 Thalers instead of 18 (as recommended for 3 players)

We found it to work very well for us, so I'd recommend giving this or some similiar variation to it a try.
