Ok guys ,

is there any news about how to use the Call to Arms deployment cards? Days of Wonder have been doing a great job by putting the CTA and EPIC rules online way before they were in store, but now i got this missing link.
Of course i made myself a second board, it looks pretty nice, and i love Epic BL. Great. But how to use CTA with Epic?
I was thinking:
3 deployment cards for left-right-center. 1 Reserve. So long the CTA rules. Change nothing.
Then just pick another card (...well draw five at the beginning ), and deploy 4 units from that card on the borderlines between the sections (left-center and center-right). Put them on the first (baseline) or third row (remember! on the red-dot borderline)Players deploy units one after another at random. This gives you some oppurtunity to respond to your opponent deployments). Put the units on the board after you have deployed the left wing units.
It should be like this order then:
Deploy Right wing, deploy center, deploy left wing, deploy borderline units (no , not the syndrom) and then finally, deploy your reserve.

The sections are bigger in Epic then in the original. Be free to deploy the units on the left or on the right side of THAT SECTION. As long as the Pattern remains in tact like the one on the deployment card.

hmmmmm...

what about it? any questions?

have a nice day!

and , oh yes... i forgot to tell about how to pick deployment cards!
this is not my idea, but it applies here. I'm sorry i forgot where i read this, but thanks to the guy who thought this one out:

pick three decks of seven, shuffle(you know A,B,C). draw 3, pick the best you like, discard the other two. repeat this until you got the 5 cards you need for this CTA-Epic game.

have fun

Just so you know, when the "retail" version of Epic comes out (I think it is slated for July now), it will be different than the PDF file currently on the DOW webpage. They are to give us instructions within that on how to use Epic and Call to Arms together. In addition, we will see what the "Reluctant Allies" is all about.

Given that the Call to Arms rules and Epic rules are both in the public domain DOW could just tell us the plan. It's not going to dent sales of the Epic set when released as it will only be purchased by people who need the extra board.

We played a game on Tuesday where we deployed using four cards accross the 17 hex width plus one card for reserves. The starting hex was two back from centre on either the right or left flank, players choice, and disposition taken from there as per the CTA cards(Deployment is therefore actually in 16 hexes). The deployment doesn't fit left right centre but it worked well and gave a good game. My only concern was that the same specialists will be chosen all the time particularly the dreaded longbow!

At Barry Clarkson:

Indeed,
I totally agree with you that DOW should reveal 'the missing link' between CTA and Epic. I'll buy Epic anyway... if you don't care about CTA it won't result in Epic sales to go down.(CTA: some of us don't like, and in fact: I'm a bit dissapointed about CTA too, it doesn't give you the opportunity (spelled right?...me so Dutch) to deploy your army the way you like it. If you want more control: use the houserule stated on the bottom of this post)
What I do not agree about: the Longbow issue.
Around the time of my first two games i thought: as long as I get the Longbows the game will be mine. But that's exactly what CTA deployment does right: if you do not deploy (many) archers, why bother about longbows? I had only one Archer unit deployed last game. I did'nt went for Longbows, no I went for Illusionary troops and whats it called..the card that adds one figure to two Units... That (in the end of deployment) resulted in me having three Red Mounted, of which two were containing 4 figures. I also had two Goblin (green) Riders, and one Blue Mounted unit that upgraded to a Red Cav in turn two because ofd the training camp in front of it! Boom. All that on one flank... just to illustrate there are other nice specialist ways!

To conclude, I believe this is a variant of Coltsfan (not sure here).
More control over deployment:
Shuffle the three chosen deploy decks (total of 21 cards).
draw 3 cards, choose the card you like. discard other two cards.
continue this until you got 5 cards (or 4 for normal board).
use this for deployment on sections, borderline and reserve, your choice.

there you go. More control. (it may very well be I already posted this, not sure...getting late here...)

Have fun,
wilmov

The updated Epic rules, including the explanations on how to use CtoA with Epic, should be up by the end of next week, in all three languages, in the download section of the web site.
