Step one remove dice That fail to beat armor. This makes both cases 5,4,3 vs 6,4.
Step two match dice pairs for comparison high to low. So 5 vs 6 defender wins so no hit, 4 vs 4 defender wins so no hit, 3 vs nothing attacker wins so 1 hit. Added up the total hits which is 1.
Step three convert hits to damage. For minions look on overlord panel to see affect of 1 hit. FOr heros any number of hits is one damage total.

Hi Brad P,

If the defender has more successes than the attacker but the attacker has a higher value dice what is the outcome?

Example attack has only 1 success of a 6 with the rest being mitigated by armour and the defender has 3 successes but their highest success is a 5 (3, 4, and a 5). Because the single 6 is paired up with the 5 and is greater does that result in a hit or no because the total amount of success die by the defender is greater?

Thanks in advance!

Combat is like the opposed rolls in Risk.

(A)ttack, (D)efense, (W)ound

A: 6 1
D: 4 4 4
W: y n n

A: 5 5
D: 5 4 4
W: n y n

Hits are determined by individual dice comparisons (that have beaten the defenders armour value), not by who has the greater number of successes rolled.

So in your example, the single 6 rolled by the attacker is successful and results in a hit, as none of the defenders dice rolls matched it (or beat it).
As per Brad's response, whether a wound (damage) results from that hit depends on whether the defender is a Hero/Boss or Minion. If it's a Hero/Boss then a Wound is suffered (maximum 1 Wound suffered regardless of the number of hits taken) but if it is a Minion then consult the Overlord panel to determine what effect 1 hit would have.

Thank you for the clarification everyone.

I have to say that makes it really difficult to be the defender as not only do you have to have as many or more successful dice as the attacker but you also have to have greater value dice than the attacker in order to avoid damage.

Remember though Rob, the defenders dice only has to match the attackers dice roll, they don't have to beat it to block the hit.

The attackers dice have to do two things, 1) beat the defenders armour value and 2) score higher then the defenders dice when paired up.

The defenders dice only one thing to do, 1) match or beat the attackers dice that have beaten it's armour value when paired up.

Plus it all depends who the attacker and defender is. A combat dice heavy Hero defending against a skeleton Warrior has a very decent chance of defending each time.

Generally it can be hard for Heroes to defend and avoid damage as only one successful hit will cause them a wound.
But, as they only suffer 1 wound per Fight/Attack anyway, that mitigates that difficulty in a way.

You've got to be tactical, choose your Fights, keep some friends close and keep your Heroes from being swarmed & offering up too many enemy attacks in one Turn (particulary if they don't have decent armour).

All part of the strategy (and enjoyment) of the game though!
