I've just finished writing the rule book for my game, and now I'm ready to format it.

My rule book is quite short. A few pages of a5 tops.

Is there a particular style or best practice preferred when it comes to formatting?

I will keep this in mind! I guess it's an easily overlooked demographic in this market.

Noted, thanks.

Have someone who is versed in technical writing and who has never played the game read it, then have them teach the game to you.

I am currently testing and iterating my rulebook and the best advice I can give is watch people read it and take notes. Play test your rulebook! It's amazing what will stop people understanding stuff.

Try to explain terms before you use them.
Use lots of images and diagrams.
Don't have long blocks of text.
Repeat really key information several times, reducing the detail each time.

Not gonna disagree with that suggestion. Ideally do both. And bring in a copy editor at some point, too.
