Hi. I just got this game recently and noticed a lot of the tiles do not fit together. Meaning that when they should fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, one tile will only fit on top of the other since it's too big. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix (possibly replacement tiles)?

I haven't had a problem with tiles and though they fit rather well they are precision cut to the micro-inth but otherwise fit pretty well.

Do your pieces not fit at all or just not perfectly?

I only have a problem with fitting the leather tiles inside the H shape.

Not a problem in my copy. Can you be more precise in your description of the amount of interference? In other words, by how much is the fit off? Can you force them together? Are they just a little snug?

Some can be tight, but mine loosened up after a few plays. You could also shim a little off the inside edges with a shard blade, but I think you'll be better off with normal wear and tear expanding those tight pieces.

I wish I could find the two that were the worst culprits but I cannot force them together. About half are very snug and with most of them I can flip one over to make them fit, but the problem is when I have three or more fitting together so can't keep flipping them. I hope that makes sense.

When we find tiles that don't mesh correctly, we can usually flip one of them over, and that seems to work.

I do have this problem with my copy. It's mostly just with pieces that have a pocket in them. I can flip them to make them fit but it's still tight and they get stuck together.

Use an emory board to very lightly sand down the tight piece. Problem solved.

I had the same problem with the set we got my daughter for Christmas. My daughter does not want me to cut or sand her game, in case I damage the pieces. I made a short call to the publisher, but I followed up with a lengthy email to the publisher after they requested additional info so they could contact their manufacturer. Spare pieces are currently out of stock and on order.

Here are some images and part of my email to Mayfair for comparison, Karen:

Quote:
I recently purchased a copy of Patchwork for my daughter for Christmas. When we opened it, my daughter and I were both having trouble playing the game because the pieces were poorly cut. You could force some together, displacing all other pieces in the process, and we could not even force some other pieces together. Please see the pictures at the end of this email as examples of the problem.

. . .

The worst fitting areas exist where one piece is supposed to "interlock" with another, like the pictures below of the "H" and the "T." The "T" can sit on top of the "H," but doesn't interlock with it.

I have found that sometimes pieces fit together if you turn one upside down. The reason this occurs is that the edges of many of the pieces are cut at a slight angle instead of straight up and down, making one face of the piece narrower and the opposite face wider. If you think about nesting a stack of plastic cups, you will understand the result; the narrow end can enter a wide end, but the wide end cannot be inserted in another wide end.

Other pieces, like some of the 1 x 1 squares, do not even fit well if they are inverted. They are just too wide.

This unfortunately makes the game a nuisance to play instead of a pleasure because it makes it much more likely that the whole "quilt" will come apart when you add a new piece. I would appreciate any assistance that you could offer us.

Scott, they told me they'd contact me when a new batch came on. I'm not holding my breath. It has been over a month since they said that.

Just turn over the H-shape and it will fit much better (same trick for the 1-square).
All pieces can roughly fit in each other. Keep calm.

Nico,

Some of the pieces do not fit no matter how I flip them. The singles units are too large.

Did you even read my post above? I knew that some pieces can be flipped too
Re: Tiles don't fit together.

For the record though, if I have an entire quilt I'm fitting the T into, some may be upside down, and some may be face up, meaning that without dismantling and flipping all surrounding pieces to a specific orientation, flipping the T will not work all the time. It only works if every piece touching it already has the same facing. Even then, the pieces fit so tightly that it's starting to tear the faces on the pieces to put them together and take them apart.

I am calm, but keeping calm won't fix a poorly crafted game.

It's a sad day when the first forum post you consult for your new game is about inferior production values, and especially from a well respected games company like Mayfair. You would think by this stage they would have some sort of decent quality control. Still, not a total disaster, a bit of creative DIY did the trick but it did leave a bad impression among all invested parties. I only hope their other games don't suffer from the same shoddy workmanship, if I ever did decide to buy any of them. Over and out.

Patrick, did you file your tiles down? Mayfair says they've been out of stock on Patchwork for months, so getting replacement parts has been a waiting game.

Hi Lee,

I used a combination of steel ruler, craft knife and fine sandpaper or use emery board/nail file as was previously mentioned. The job took just over hour as some of the ill fitting pieces aren't obvious, some of the 1x1 squares wouldn't fit certain patterns. It was a bit annoying to be doing this and by the time I finished, my players had lost interest in having a go. Hopefully later on today I can get it up and running. All I can say at the end of the day is thank god Mayfair aren't in the jigsaw making business (or Lego, Ikea, Meccano etc.

You were doing this tile maintenance for an hour while people were waiting to play the game?! wow

Didn't think it would take so long but I wanted to do it right and get it done. My players (family members) started playing Splendor and that was the end for Patchwork shake

Patrick, does sanding the pieces rough up the edges and make them look tattered? I have sanded foamcore before for an insert build that was 2mm too large; the foam sanded perfectly, but sanding the paper left jagged bits of paper on the edge.

It's not too noticeable Lee, if you take your time. I can't testify as the the long term wear and tear as I've only played it 5 times so far. I'm still finding pieces that are wonkey so more work is required to fix it fully which is a pain in the arse to be brutally honest.

Thanks for the advice, Patrick. I may wait for replacement pieces rather than trying to hack up my daughter's copy without a replacement set in hand.

Cheers,

Hi All,

I just pick up a copy of this game last weekend and finally played it yesterday. The pieces did not fit for us either. It seemed some of the pieces had slightly curved edges (the 2x2 square piece was the most noticeable). My wife and I played this awesome game at a board game cafe and fell in love. The pieces fit perfectly on that (older) copy.

I don't think I will be cutting my pieces, as my hand is not that steady and I don't want to ruin the game.

Has anyone contacted Mayfare and gotten a response? I would like to request replacement pieces also...

Thanks!
