Just played a really enjoyable 4 player game of Cuba Libre (won by 26 July) . I was the DR and I stalled on about 8 pop + bases (with 4) as I couldn't see a way of getting enough pop controlled to win.

My question - do I have to go for Havana? Is that pretty much my only shot or am I missing something.

Regards,

John

You are missing something. You need to focus on the Holy Trinity. Check out my video on the subject:

Hmm - ok, guess I was doing it right by chasing the 'Holy Trinity'. In my game the US Alliance never fell below the mid level and the Govt were pretty much always awash with resources. The result being that he trained into Las Villas to get a base and then enough troops to make it difficult for me to take.

Also the July 26 took Oriente (control) then played pact of Caracas making it hard for me to claim it back.

I got close - 8 points - but was never really in a position to get the extra 2 - Las Villas had turned into a no go zone and I couldn't find a way to get forces into the other provinces in sufficient numbers.

Enjoyed the game - may do things a bit different if I'm the DR next time.

Thanks for the advice,

John

How did the Government never get into embargo? Pretty much if you haven't won the game as Government, it's dropping each Prop round. Every game is different, but in most games they tend to have a serious resource issue.

Keep in mind that you don't need a positive Victory Margin to win at the end of the game... as long as all the other Factions have even lower Victory Margins than you do.

The Government really lucked out getting cards that pushed the US Alliance track back up after nearly all the prop rounds - given this I basically ended up keeping the government honest and so gave the game to July 26. If we'd gone to the last round victory conditions then the Syndicate would have won as they had 7 casinos.

Every game is quirky, but it sounds like the card order really benefited Government. What you are describing is pretty atypical from my experience.
