Imagine if the most populous state was also the ultimate swing state like Florida, the third-largest, and its 55 electoral votes were what was going to swing the election.

California used to be competitive:
Bush 51.1%, Dukakis 47.6%
Ford 49.35%, Carter 47.57%
Nixon 47.82%, Humphrey 44.74%
Nixon 50.10%, Kennedy 49.55%
Truman 47.57%, Dewey 47.13%.

Go back to 1924 when only 8% of Californians voted for the Democrat for president...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_ele...

California has many research universities, technology companies, and smart people willing to try to create and explore the wonderful scientific inventions and ideas ... but for some strange reason they can't seem to count as fast as the rest of the country.

I had actually looked this up last week. The reason it takes CA so long is they have very pro-voter laws. Absentee ballots are still counted as long as they are postmarked on election day. Absentee ballots also can be turned in at polling locations. Furthermore, in many districts, if an absentee ballot is received without a signature, the district will reach out to the voter to get them to sign it.

Basically all of those pro voter laws lead to it taking longer to count the votes because CA is trying to make sure that everyone who wants to cast a vote is able to do so. That said, two weeks is a bit absurd.

My guess is that if CA were a swing state, they'd spend more money to count faster.

Aside from that, clearly(?) they're not breaking any laws here. So why does it matter?

What? Are you making fun of yourself or do you just not know what the word schadenfreude means?

At this point, I agree with you whole-heartedly. Counting the vote shouldn't take this long unless something is seriously wrong somewhere. Not enough funding for vote counting or a bad system.

It's simply a full process, with deadlines (I think sometimes this week), audits and certifications. There would be a problem if the deadline was not met.

Clinton's popular vote margin is now 2.68 million and will continue to grow a bit until California finishes its count.
