I played this recently and all players present were highly skeptical of the blond bidding system which the rules asked for in regards to taking over the barbarians in a 3p game. In lieu of this we bidded in the round until everyone but one passed, with the bid going to the barbarians as normal. I believe this made the game more interesting, the economic pressure as well as the pressure to keep the barbarians within certain areas of the map made for a lot of fun.

Has anyone else tried bidding variants?

Its probably fine to have open bidding, as long as you recognize that it increases the power of wealthier players by enabling them to outbid others more efficiently, and telegraphs the value that players assign to the mercenaries, resulting in fewer surprises (and IMHO a less interesting game).
