So I just barely made it to the con, having been on the waitlist since the day sales started. I thought the wargames room were less attended than in previous years (by wargamers, we saw some general overflow of games of all types and even a sort of 'eating area' sprang up as they moved the concession closer to us this year). Was this due to any wargamers willing but unable to make the con this year?

Yea, I noticed the wargaming area was a bit lean this year too. Swung by a few times hoping to catch someone looking for a game but just a few people in there already playing.

I will probably never be able to attend this con until I retire. There is a water technical conference that happens at nearly the same time every year that I'm pretty much obligated to attend. I do hope to make it someday.

Try to convince them to have the water conference in Texas. Problem solved. :-)

Your joking right?

I know of at least one regular wargamer who was unable to attend because of a lack of a ticket. I'd also surmise that with the opening of the rooms on the 11th and 12th floors, that some of the wargaming has moved to those quieter venues. I know some of mine did.

Nope. Always thought BGGcon was all about Euros and Ameritrash games.

108 planned wargames over 4 days.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/213668/bgg-con-2016-wa...?

And this lists only those publicly planned. More goes on than this geeklist indicates.

Yeah, I think opening the rooms lead to less in the wing, plus people who couldn't get tickets due to it sellout out in record time.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does "opening of the rooms" mean?

I think they just mean that there were more hotel meeting rooms made available to BGGCon than in previous years, so a lot of games that might have happened in the main wargame rooms in previous years instead happened on the 11th floor, and elsewhere.

Yep. I have been to 2 Cons and here is what I played at each one:

2014
2016

All wargames, all the time. I had a backlog. I had more requests than I could handle.

I live close, so no hotel cost. So, do you all pre-plan what games your playing, when your going to play them and against whom before you even get their?

Most of my gaming at BGG.con is pre-planned. It's hard to find a pick-up game of Guderian's Blitzkrieg or 6-players sitting around looking to commit 8 hours to Virgin Queen.

That being said, I usually have a few hours long blocks unfilled that I use to socialize, check out the vendors, get a pick-up game of something small or, maybe if I'm feeling desperate, a Euro.

Yep. Check out the Geeklist that Gordon posted. That is how we plan them out and who is bringing them.

If it is a popular game (ex: COIN or Washington's War) or a recent game, there is a good chance it will be in the BGG Library, but if you are playing something like Lee Takes Command, like I did, you're probably going to have to arrange who will bring it. Fortunately, there are a lot of Texans, Okies, and Kansans who drive down and bring them.

Likewise. A couple of months in advance of BGGCon, somebody posts a geeklist for people looking to organize wargames, and a separate list for epic games. The kinds of things you don't organize on the fly, like Gordon said.

I kind of admire people willing to pay hundreds - if not thousands of dollars - to go play ftf wargames. It shows dedication to the hobby.

If it comes to that, I can always stand outside and pan-handle with a sign around my neck that says "No Ticket, Live close, Case Blue sized Game Table". laugh
