Howdy all,

I'm looking for small-ish board games with lots of theme and some randomness. I am re-packing the bag that I carry around pretty much everywhere. It's almost exclusively abstracts right now, but they aren't for everyone.

So I want to remove some of the abstracts and put in some heavily themed games. After trimming out a lot of abstract games here's what I have:
1) ZERTZ
2) Trax
3) Martian Coasters/Treehouse
4) Tichu
5) Cribbage
6) Bang!
7) 1-2 Magic decks

I'd love to fill in a nice themed game that can be easily played with 2 and one that's good with 3. I don't want it to become too card-game heavy. Loct Cities was considered, but doesn't fit my hope to have a themed board game here. Fjords seems a little too abstract. I'm considering a Carcassone game, I think I can make that fit in a pretty small space.

Anyone have suggestions for me?

Thanks,
-JEEP

Catan: Portable Edition or Trans Europa - excellent train games in a smaller box
TransAmerica - one of the big three "gateways" in a smaller size

Neither is a card game, both will play two people and both are more themed than abstracts typically are.

Through the Desert has a box of about the same size as Carcassonne. It will never be accused of having a heavy theme of course and there's no random elements while playing. It's more of a gateway game between abstracts and euros.

That's weird. This bit used to mention Shire Games, and tell you all how wonderful we are. But it seems to have got deleted. Let's see what happens this time ....

Although they need 3 or 4 players

Roma is a good one for 2.

Plunder is another option (2 to 4 players)

Also, I was thinking that Ra could be done without the board. You'd only need a reference card that defines scoring and how many Ra tiles stop the game for each number of players. Then again you could just do Razzia!

Attika is a posibility, Packs down small. works well through the player range (best with two though) and themed. Game play can be somewhat abstract.

Alhambra packs down pretty small and you may be able to do away with the board if you have a colored chip to match the money types on the tiles up for sale.

There's Fairy Tale. A card game but the artwork is nice and the theme works.

To Court the King and Diamant both are good traveling games. All of the Adlung games are very portable - the better ones are Verräter, Meuterer, Vom Kap bis Kairo and Die Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg.

San Juan is a great game with a theme that is understood and liked by most people - Building buildings and selling wares. You draw cards randomly, so there´s the random part you wanted. If you remove the box it doesn't require much space at all.

Edit: Oops, just noted you rated that one a five. Well, I like it

I just printed out a copy of Pocket Civ and it's very portable (especially if you draw the map on a piece of paper instead of printing the optional "deluxe" tiles). It's a solo game with a 2 player variant.

The game seems interesting but my first game ended pretty fast, still it has some positive reviews here...

BTW, no piecepack? and no icehouse(oops)???

Nice to see Trax in there. I love that game!

I 'third' Hive, that's a great two-player game that doesn't take up too much time or space.

Thanks all, keep them coming!

Hive: I just pulled it out. I have the older wooden version and the stickers are getting too wrinkly. I might consider upgrading to the bakelite version, but not for now.

Piecepack: Also just removed. Too abstract for the folks I'm most oftem playing games with.

And my icebox is generally in the car.

Trax: I'm tempted to take it out until I get a second set. We're starting to draw much too often. I like it though.

Ra: I could probably do that. It scales well.

Attika: I'm not sure it would go over well. I might give it a shot, I like that game.

Roma: I've never played. I'll go read the reviews.

Plunder: I've heard mixed reviews on this.

As for the others, I'll think about them. Thanks.

Um, I'm pretty sure that Zertz and Trax are abstract and don't have randomness.
If lack of randomness doesn't actually bother you, I agree with the suggestions to add Hive.

Tantrix also has nice Bakelite tiles in a pouch the size of Hive, and does have random drawing of tiles. It also works with 2-4 players.

Right... I have those, so I don't need other abstracts. I was giving you clues to what these games are going to go with so that it's easier to get a good variety.

I like Hive, but I just pulled it from the bag. I don't see how it has much theme, personally.

Tantrix is too abstract for the crowd, I think.

Scrabble, travel edition.

Long after we are all dead and buried and all but a handful of games rated in this database are dust and ash - there will still be Scrabble.

I like Scrabble. I've studied some word lists (I know all the 2s and 3s before the additions in ?2006?.) I'm in that unfortunate spot between casual and tournament players. People don't like playing casually with me and I'm not good enough to play competitively.

And I really do want something with a bit more theme.
