Well I been watchin' while you been coughin, I've been drinking life while you've been nauseous, and so I drink to health while you kill yourself and I got just one thing that I can offer... Go on and save yourself and take it out on me

I've never been a musical guy, but I decided to listen to Hamilton. That was a life changing experience. Any suggestions for where I should go next?

And don't say Rent. I've had friends that loved Rent and they ruined it for me.

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

So open ended...

I'm going to throw a dark horse out here - classic Sondheim. Company. Here is the incomparable Elaine Stritch doing The Ladies Who Lunch

Mike, thought provoking would be more my style. If I want pop music, I have plenty of that. I need a good story. I think I might like historical drama so Andy's 1776 might be spot on. I'll check out Company as well.

Also, check out Blood Bloody Andrew Jackson.

My recommendation exactly, although it helps to be a history geek.

And for bonus geek-cred: Brent Spiner (Data of Star Trek TNG fame) played John Adams in the 1997 Broadway revival of 1776.

Loves me some Jesus Christ Superstar.

Forget about the old hippy movie from the 70s. If you're listening to just the music, cop the brown album.

There was a pretty stunning film version in 2000:

Fiddler on the Roof! It has history (albeit from a very limited perspective) and good music.

If you want something more lighthearted, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is funny and clever.

The obvious next step, which I'm amazed no one has suggested, is Lin Manuel Miranda's first Broadway musical, In The Heights.

Lin is an unabashed fan of Stephen Sondheim, and I'll take any opportunity to recommend my favorite show, Company.

But, be aware, there is a reason Hamilton is such a phenomenon - there really isn't anything else quite like it. Nothing ever quite lives up to the amount of hype that surrounds this particular show, at least that was what I thought on my way into the theater the day we went to see it. But somehow this show (as you've discovered) transcends time and place and age and race to become something simply astounding.

Hit me up offline for more suggestions / discussion - we are in my wheelhouse here. Hell, let's see a show next time you're in NYC . . .

Disclaimer: opinions ahead - YMMV.

Hated Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, but then we did see the only performance where Benjamin Walker (Jackson) stepped aside to let his understudy perform. Seems to have been all personality in the performance, but little of note in the book and score . . .

We saw and enjoyed Something Rotten last year, especially the number linked above. But later that month we saw Fun Home, and now who cares about Something Rotten . . .

Fun Home, like Hamilton, is something completely different which still fully belongs on Broadway. In this case it a musical structured like a straight play, with gorgeous and heartbreaking music, breathtaking lyrics and timely heart. Highly recommended.

Spring Awakenings has an engaging score, but is just not a good story unless you are a teenaged emo-goth.

Mormon, Spelling Bee and Hedwig are all very much worth hearing / seeing. I can take or (more often) leave Superstar.

And I'm guessing you already saw my take on the wonderful Fiddler?

I loved Andrew Jackson. But, I did see it with the main cast (and have a poli sci degree).

That and Fiddler are the only two soundtracks I've ever gone out and bought.

Fiddler is my all time favorite.

I guess I was assuming though that you (Steve) were asking about listening to the soundtrack. I think that the 'thought provoking' part is reduced by just listening to the sound track.

Last year, I took my youngest daughter to see it. See had seen it when she was younger, but now that she is in high school, she said when they were talking about being sent to Siberia or fleeing to the safety of Warsaw, she cried a bit. Knowing now what all that entailed.
