This discussion inspired me the idea that there could be upgradable traits, which, from the moment you slip 1-2 cards under it, acquire new abilities.

Fertile + 1 card: Before the food cards are revealed, gain 1 population.

Climbing + 1 card: may access the cliff.

Foraging + 1 card: when this species takes food, take 1 additional food from the same source.

Burrowing + 1 card: ignore 1 unfed population when determining if this species is hungry.

Fat tissue + 1 card: at the end of the Play cards phase, if Fat tissue is empty, you may lose 1 body size.

Rough ideas, but I think there’s something to do here, even if it’s just with new trait ideas.

What's the benefit of losing body size?

Symbiosis, climate, putting horns on and becoming less attractive.

But yeah, that fat tissue idea is my least favourite.

Oh, another one, to build on another topic:

Symbiosis:
cannot be attacked if the species to the right has a larger sum of body size + population

+1 card: cannot be attacked if the species to the right has a larger body size

Becoming less attractive to predators?
In Evolution: Climate, it would be handy to avoid die-off due to Warming...

There is a discussion about losing body size here.

I like the idea of traits having stronger versions and that you could evolve in that direction. But I feel that slipping cards under a trait could get disorganized or hard to see depending on how people choose to arrange their species and trait cards.

Also, I feel that paying a single card to boost a trait is a little too cheap.

I know it would flood the game with a lot of cards that could be useless in the hands of some players, but I wonder if separate trait cards that boost another trait might be a better way to go.

So, you might have a card like:

Prehensile Tail: A species must have Climbing to use this trait. This species may feed from the Cliff.

To use it, you'd have to have Climbing. This means that the combo would take up 2/3 of your trait slots, but could be fairly strong. This would turn an ordinary climber into a climbing specialist. We could even call these specialization trait cards.

Heres a few more:

Raiding Hordes: A Carnivore must have Pack Hunting to use this trait. Add Population + Body Size + 3 when determining if this species can make an attack.

Think Army Ants. Carnivore, Pack Hunting and Raiding Hordes would take all three trait slots, but it could be worth it.

Prolific: A species must have Fertile to use this trait. At the end of the feeding phase, this species gains one population if it was fully fed.

In a food heavy environment, a Prolific/Fertile species would grow fast even if being regularly hunted.

Aggressive Prey: This species must have Horns to use this trait. A Carnivore must lose an additional population before attacking this species.

Further deterrent to Carnivores.

IMHO, this would be way too costly and random – these cards would be useless in 90% of the cases.

If it were like this, they should be universal "upgrade" cards, with all the upgrades they trigger written on them if not on the impacted trait cards.

Personally I love this idea but yeah it's difficult to put them into the base game, but I think it can be done with a second drawing pile full of advanced traits. I don't know when to draw an advanced trait but it can be cool. (Perhaps in add one event card to the base pile allowing to draw from the advanced pile)

I would to add a rule to the advanced trait: when you discard the base trait, the advanced trait is discarded too.
