First turn, 11:30 am, Bussey lobs shells into McCulloch's line, stirring up a hornet's nest. McIntosh maneuvers to the left, while Pike's Cherokees pitch in and overrun Elbert's battery and the 3 Iowa. Herbert B advances to the Wiley Foster farmyard, crushing Bussey and driving off the remnants while Greusel hurries to the crossroads to support Hoffman's battery.

On the other flank, Price tumbles from his horse in the broken ground along the Confederate left and is out of action. As a result, only Slack's brigade of his division activates, skirmishing inconclusively with Weston. Feeling the growing pressure along his front, Carr orders Dodge to pull the 1st Iowa back into reserve.

At noon, Price's difficulties continue and only Little manages to advance, but a rebels whipped chit slows him to 3 mps. McCulloch fairs no better, and the the Union brings up Carr's second brigade, while Greusel advances to the southern edge of Foster's field to pin the rebels in an attempt to disrupt their advance towards Elkhorn Tavern.

By one o'clock, seeing that McCulloch is resuming his march to the left, Osterhaus aggressively pushes Greusel forward onto Foster's farm. McIntosh's men dismount and engage in a rapidly intensifying firefight while McCulloch lead's Herbert's brigades towards the tavern, but is slowed by the use of two rebels whupped chits which reduce his movement to one and two movement points, respectively, with the tail of his column still back at the Sturdy farm.

On the Confederate left, Price has recovered and resumes command, ordering Green through the heavy woods to a ridge in sight of the Union line at the Clemens farm. There, the 1 Iowa battery B lobs shells in its direction, causing casualties and forcing them further back into the woods.

At 2 pm, Slack advances through the woods northwest of the tavern, engaging Vandever's 25th Missouri, and driving it back after a sharp action. Little shows no interest in charging into the strong Union line and two batteries awaiting it at Elkhorn Tavern, so Price rides to his left to push his other brigades through the heavily forested, broken ground towards the lightly held Union right.

McCulloch continues his slow advance, finally approaching GW Ford's farm, unaware that Weston's men and a federal battery await just beyond.

The heaviest fighting continues on the other side of the battlefield, as McIntosh and Pike push through the woods south of Fosters and drive back Greusel's 36th Illinois and destroy several guns of Hoffman's battery. Davis orders Pattison up from north of Leetown, to advance through the fields against Pike and McIntosh, resulting in a sharp fight that weakens both sides, but sees Pattison tie in and extend Greusel's left flank. Satisfied that the two Union brigades can hold against the rebel cavalry, Davis orders White with Davidson's battery to march towards Pratt's Store in support of Curtis.
