I question the phrase "lost their minds", but who knows what sets people off any more.

HOW DARE WHITE SOUTHERNERS LOVE THEIR HOMELAND!!!

Here's the lyrics and this article: http://www.shmoop.com/sweet-home-alabama/meaning.html

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the south-land
I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again and I think it's a sin

Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you, here I come

Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two (yes they do)
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue, now how bout you?

Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

Sweet home Alabama, oh sweet home
Where the skies are so blue and the governor's true
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you

It's almost as offensive as saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". Think of all the soldiers who died for your Yule-Tide liberty in the War on Christmas.

Honestly the hypocrisy on RSP is getting tiring (from both sides).

Seriously, that story doesn't stand even the broadest sniff test. I think he took a chain email and inserted himself into the narrative to make it sound more real.

Treating the story as true; I think it's unfair to judge these people. It's natural human instinct to tense up when you're reminded Alabama exists.

I assume this is a mostly fictional artistic license. I find it impossible to believe an extremely well known 40+ year old song caused a store full of people to "stand in shock".

I love Sweet Home Alabama. Most people know, of course, that the song was Lynyrd Skynyrd's response to Neil Young's "Southern Man"... a song describing the racism blacks faced in the deep south. So was Lynyrd Skynyrd defending racism when they wrote Sweet Home Alabama? Or did they simply not understand the point of Neil Young's song?

From Wikipedia:

The lyrics of "Southern Man" are vivid, describing the racism towards blacks in the American South. In the song, Young tells the story of a white man (symbolically the entire white South) and how he mistreated his slaves. Young pleadingly asks when the South will make amends for the fortunes built through slavery when he sings, "I saw cotton and I saw black, tall white mansions and little shacks. Southern Man, when will you pay them back?" The song also mentions the practice of cross burning.

Young was very sensitive about the song's message as anti-racism and anti-violence. During his 1973 tour, he cancelled a show in Oakland, California because a fan was beaten and removed from the stage by a guard while the song was played.

We've been complaining about "horseshit journalism" for quite some time. Glad you finally joined us.

For example, this self-indulgent primal scream was actually published in the Washington Post, a former newspaper.

Drew, just out of curiosity, what is good journalism?

"Southern Man"

Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

I saw cotton
and I saw black
Tall white mansions
and little shacks.
Southern man
when will you
pay them back?
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

Lily Belle,
your hair is golden brown
I've seen your black man
comin' round
Swear by God
I'm gonna cut him down!
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Given the special snowflakes noted in the article, I don't find it at all difficult to imagine they were in shock.

SJWs and the Alt-Left look for all kinds of reasons to be offended; this is just one of them.

I gotta tell you, I've always disliked this song. After 5 years in the service, I now loathe it. I freely admit I spent way too much time drinking at the Airman's Club on base and songs like this have a special place in the blackened, foetid part of my brain where unreasonable and irrational hate lives. I doubt I'd flip out over it, but it doesn't get past 4 notes on my radio before I panickingly start mashing on buttons to make it stop

I don't know what radio is like down in the States, but up here, half the stations are the same preprogrammed "classic" list of Boston, Styx, Led Zeppelin and... Sweet Home Alabama, about 6 times a day.
If liberals really freaked out at the song, it would have happened years ago, and dozens of times a week in every city with a radio station.
