Hi all,

Looking for a game for Christmas which the whole family will enjoy.

6yr old who likes playing Ticket to Ride (without much strategy!) and Catan Junior

10yr old and 8 yr old who like Cyclades but find Ticket to Ride boring

I am thinking Carcassonne, Alhambra or Forbidden Island. Any tips on choosing between these 3, or recommendations for other games would be appreciated.

Check Ice Cool! It's a 10 for me!

https://boardgamegeek.com/video/110397/ice-cool/ice-cool-how...

Its a 10 for me because:

1) Very fun with kids and adults
2) I love the art and theme
3) Very short (15-20 min)
4) Its easy to learn
5) Its a unique kind of game!:
The pinguins moves in various ways (straight line, curve and jump) and the box-in-box concept is excelent

Thebes, if you dont mind a bit of luck (well integrated with the mechanics, I must say). Also Takenoko may work.

From what you listed - I cant imagine how Carcassonne may not be boring if TTR is, but I havent played the other two yet.

I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.

It's gotta be King of Tokyo.

King of Tokyo!

We haven't played Forbidden Island, but we enjoy Forbidden Desert--same designer, a little more complex (2.04/5 instead of 1.74/5 for Island).

My kids have a similar spread in age. Games that have worked for us:

King of Tokyo
Magic: The Gathering – Arena of the Planeswalkers
Rise of Augustus

If a very simple rpg doesn't scare you away, there is one called "adventure Maximus" which they have also really enjoyed.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have been looking at the video reviews online to find one my girls will like.... then discovering some of them are hard to source in New Zealand.... grrr that's frustrating!

Colt Express might be a good fit. The kids in my family love it! Carcassonne is also a good choice, though Colt Express is more exciting.

King of Tokyo all the way!

Also, +1 for Augustus. Dixit would also be fun with this group.

My kids are 11, 9, and 6, and their favorites are listed below (in no particular order, but these games are all hits).

1) Robo Rally
2) Dixit
3) One Night Ultimate Werewolf
4) Bohnanza
5) Sheriff of Nottingham
6) FITS
7) Telestrations
8) Takenoko
9) Mysterium
10) Flick em up!
11) Sleeping Queens
12) Love Letter Batman

Also - these are the games they pull out and play without me (thus, more kids' games than family games)

1) Whoowasit?
2) Enchanted Forest

Games I hoped to be awesome family games that my kids didn't care for:

1) Libertalia
2) King of Tokyo
3) Shadows over Camelot
